i would look for a loose wire either at the battery or at the ignition. sounds like one worked loose during your ride. let us know what it is if you find it!

There is a few vmax for sale ( running) in Michigan for around 2 ~ 3 grand. ( on Craigslist) I would say grab one of those and enjoy the last month of riding and then grab that basket for 500 bucks for a spare bike.
