    Centre stand collapsing

1992 VMax 1200, 60,000miles A few weeks ago I noticed it getting harder to push the bike of the centre stand. I thought I was just getting old, losing muscle condition and maybe it was all me. But yesterday when I went to my bike, I noticed it was leaning to one side and the centre stand was not...

    Greetings from the nordics

Check out ‘Kodakuna Raida’ on YouTube, he has some really helpful VMax self help videos. good luck!

    Clutch slave cylinder replacement

Might want to consider a new gasket and crush washer for the cover plate. Good luck

Was doing burnouts, clutch won’t engage after. Is it’s a burnt clutch or something else?

As a quick ‘left field’ idea, I would pop the clutch slave off and see if it has somehow got stuck. More likely one of the problems mentioned above, but if somehow the clutch has jammed on, this quick check could save some more detailed fault finding/repair. Good luck

1st Gen V-Max Idle rough when hot

Hi Gianni, If you have run out of ideas, I would try stripping the carburetors down and thoroughly cleaning them out, replacing any bad parts. I would especially look at your adjustable pilot screws and small diaphragm set (on my ‘92 this is #5). I did them on my 1992 recently and they were...

    First Vmax/First Bike

For some good videos on rebuilding a VMax, check out ‘Kodokuna Raida’ on YouTube, he doesn’t do everything the way I would but he does a great job showing how easy it is to bring a bike back to life

    Gen. 1 suspension observations

Sounds like you need to service your struts and replace the seals, not a difficult job. I had similar issues with my 92. Was a combination of the front brake grabbing and struts leaking. In the end a complete clean, service and seal replacement of both brakes and struts and my front end came...

    Overheats blows steam through resevior

No expert here, just thinking about how this sounds like the normal pressure release/hold is not working and/or bypassed. Did you by chance open the drain tap at the base of the radiator and forget to shut it off again? On my Gen1, that circuit looks like it allows direct flow from the bottom of...

    Carb rebuild

Gen 1: On YouTube, look for Virago XV535 carburetor, same carbs except they only have 2. There are some YouTube videos on VMax carbs, but many more on the Virago. There is an excellent Timelapse of someone stripping a full VMax set of 4, but it is so fast and the camera never zooms in on any...

Should overflowing gas drain thru vent hose? (Picture) Please verify. Thanks.

I had this exact issue last week with no2 carb overflowing and flooding the no2 cylinder. I assumed a stuck float. Disassembled no2 carb, reassembled and problem went away, so pretty sure a bit of gunk was stuck either in the float or the needle. After ensuring no more leaks, balanced the carbs...

Setting dry float levels on the bench

Someone should put a video of this on YouTube. I have been looking for this procedure (video, photos, written instructions) for ages. The manual just says ‘remove and replace’ and the only YouTube videos I could find both drilled them out, with obvious resulting damage. I tried tapping mine out...

    Ignition Leads

Same here in Canberra, Australia. Couldn’t find replacement set of HT leads so just got 2m of cable and made them up. The grommets come as part of the coil but the coils here cost over $150 each. So I used grommets from the hardware store for two of my damaged ones.

    Sydney Australia Rides/Meets

Try asking on the “Oz VMax (Australia)” Facebook group. I am just outside Canberra. There are a few groups around Perth/Brisbane/Melbourne who get together. Haven’t seen many ‘group’ type posts coming out of Sydney

    Looking For A New GPS

I use iPhone X, the only issue is when the temp drops to freezing the battery life drops to 5% and iPhone drops off line. Wife’s iPhone does the same so I would caution anyone using a cell/mobile phone if you ride in cool climes. Otherwise, the navigation apps and options on mobiles are as good...

Where do you buy parts online

For OEM parts - I have found WeBike (Japan: YAMAHA VMAX 1200: OEM Parts - Webike ) to be excellent for OEM Yamaha parts. Even with shipping costs (to Australia), they are cheaper than buying here in Australia (sometimes as low as half the local price), and 99% of the time cheaper than USA...

What did you do to your Vmax today? Part 2

Only thing that I needed help with so far was lifting the engine from the ATV lift onto the table, and rolling it over

What did you do to your Vmax today? Part 2

Had some trouble with the ignition system and am still waiting for a replacement pick-up coil. Have already replaced the coils, leads and ignition controller. Figured they all lasted 30years so if I am going to spend money on it, I may as well do my best to get another 30 years and just replace...

    1st Gen V-Max Maxed-out

G’day Al, welcome. If you are looking for local riders, there are reasonably regular posts on the Facebook group ‘Oz VMax (Australia)’. Seems to be a couple of regular groups who ride together in Perth and SE Qld, can’t say I have seen a lot in Sydney but they may have their own FB group. I am...

    spark plug change

On my 1992/gen1 the only problem I ever had was the clamps on the water hoses (front left & rear right). I have to raise the hose clamps to get the socket drive in, then end up with coolant leaking into the cylinders. I spray lots of water dispersant around, leave the HT leads off and turn the...

    Clutch lever

I would be tempted to service and replace all seals in master and slave. While you are there check the length of the push rods. I suspect that the system is leaking and the after market lever just allows you to pull in deeper so either a) the leak is not apparent, or b) the previous owner...
