Talk to user BlownMax, he had a nice picture of his old Max that had a blower on it, but I can't find the picture on the site any more.

Found the picture!

Hi Guys

Sorry it's took a while to get back to you but have been on Holiday for a few days

Ragarding the Magnacharger kit (yes it is the one I used) this is my own personal opinion remember, firstly it is meant to be basically set up when you get it but each individual bike is different, there are 2 type of kits available low boost and high boost, the kit I opted for is the high boost kit, this reqires the fitting of Low compression pistons and Magnacharger reccomend the use of there 5th gear kit also, this I also fitted (believe it or not with all this fitted 3000rpm in top equated to 80mph!!! and nearly 40mpg on the motorway runs (freeway in your case)) figures were as follows 173bhp @ the rear wheel, clocked 174mph through the flying mile on the drag strip and 102ft/lb of torque.

Now for the not so good bit:

Blew the motor up twice (due to the suppliers stating that the pistons were just a straight forward fit and only required the barrels deglazing before fitting!!) not the case as on the 3rd rebuild I took it to an engine specialist (who is also a drag racer) and he said clearances were far too small so I had him build the engine to the correct spec (ran it for 3000 miles like this with no problems)

Secondly the bike with the fitted was very difficult to ride in Traffic as the Supercharger is constantly spinning the bike hunts for fuel and surges, also Idle was very erratic and could not be set for a smooth idle whatsoever, Motorway runs were a joy as at our motorway speeds the bike was basically idling!!!

Lastly I know of a couple of our guys over here that have had quite a few problems with the Magnacharger kits a couple have even had their shafts on the supercharger themselves snap!!!! and the fifth gear kits turn into mush!! never had these problems with mine but only fair to let you in on what others over here have experienced.

Would I reccomend it???? only if Magnacharger were willing to stand by there product and take failures into account (they did replace my first set of L/C pistons free of charge) Personally I don't think you can beat a good Turbo set rather than the Supercharger, just my opinion though.

Steve

That's a lot of good info to have before jumping into purchasing a supercharger. I might have to look into turbos a little more as well before I make a decision.

Thanks much for the reply! :worthy00:

I taked to John at Sportmax today and he said that he is not dealing with Magnacharger anymore due to various reasons having to do with quality and factory support.
He also said that one of the main problems is that the Holley that comes with it runs lean at higher boost and burns up pistons. Not from the weakness of the bottom end but inability to adequately manage the A/F ratio.
He absolutely loves the Supercharger idea and thinks it is ideal for the Max and it's image and is looking into selling his own setup at some point in the future.

He also said turbos will make your bike sound like a boat motor. I've been around a lot of turbo'ed V-8 drag cars and I tend to agree; they do sound wierd.

I wonder if that EFI unit would work better with the blower than the carb would?

Is there any info on what kind of ECU it uses, how it gets it's injector signals etc. ????

The ability to create air fuel maps using throttle position, manifold pressure, rpms etc is key to being able to make Forced induction work with EFI....

EFI is match made in heaven for any F/I application when the ECU being used is programmable; especially if the ECU can use a boost reference......
If a Mass Air Flow sensor is used then sometimes it will do most of the work just by seeing how much air is going in the motor and letting the ECU figure out the rest...
At lower boost levels a mere boost referenced fuel pressure regulator that raises pressure 1 lb per pound of boost is sometimes enough.....
There's no worries about blow thru-draw thru or getting the damn carbs to realize what the hell is going on when going from vaccum to boost in the manifold....
The system on my wife's car was considered crude as it did not even touch the ECU but merely used a boost referenced variable speed auxiluary fuel pump to jack up the pressure on the injectors according to boost levels...worked like a dream

All the above is my opinion only; I've done a lot of work on F/I import hotrods in the past......

Where is it that you can buy the magna charger for the vmax i have been looking and can not find a damn thing but old pages.

Oddly enough I just spoke to Bill Bushling last week He says he IS still in business. And quoted me some prices on superchargers for the Vmax and the Valkyrie.
I stopped by his shop last spring and the place was deserted.
He said he fired everyone and is running the shop alone.
But I am also not aware of anyone getting anything from him in years. Kinda worries me I've got one of his CCW spin superchargers on my Valkyrie and there is no one else to get a CCW Eaton from.
Wanted to supercharge my Max but I'm not going to roll the dice with him.
He still answers the Magnacharger phone number.

Last I had heard he was going through a divorce which is probably what put the hurting on him. Maybe he's got it all sorted out by now. They are not a very efficient supercharger system but still pretty cool.

I just emailed with Bill last week and he says he is in business. He tells me he will not build a kit until it's ordered and it takes about 3-4 weeks to ship.

He's qouting $4500 now for the whole kit.

Rusty

yea, all for not much more then 150-160rwhp and a ton of heat added into the engine. They do sound cool which is about the biggest thing they have going for them. Other then that they aren't all that advantageous.

Hi, I have been doing business with Bill at magnacharger for the last two months. I have orderd a set of low compression piston kit for vmax. I recieved it with in 2 weeks, came in a box labled magnacharger. I have spoken with bill several times when ordering my parts. I just orderd my supercharger for my vmax february 15th. Bill has informed me he has completed the Blower and the carb. I should be recieving the completed supercharger by the end of the month. I spoke with him at least 5 times. I really dont think he is "out of business" He may not be running the MAIN business that he used too. But, Like I said I have been communicating with him for several weeks and have recieved parts in...

Hope this helps.

Sweet! :thumbs up: If you wouldn't mind, can you photo document the build up process and post it here? :worthy:

I will post as many pictures i have available soon . I have already installed my JE 8:6.1 low comp pistons . and now have the bike back to running with 500 miles since I finished the engine.I do believe if anyone would like to supercharge there vmax break in period is very important. which is why I built the engine and been riding it with my stock carbs. . While the engine was out I had my frame and engine covers , rims ,scoops and etc all powdercoated. cost was roughly 950 $ as to whether supercharged is advandtegous or not how can 40 plus rwhp and 30 plus foot pound increase not be awesome. at the minimum but i have seen supercharged 1200cc with low compression pistons dyno at 175 plus rwhp at 12 psi of boost .

Here's the photos that are in copilots777 zip package above.
