I would like to know what setup you're running and your weight. Shawn

a general description of the mods would be helpful with the numbers.

I would love to get a timed 1/4 mile, but havent had the privilage yet

10.98 @ 121 1.667 60'

99 Vmax
Stock Suspension with front end strapped down (though one fork seal is totally blown out)
Kerker header with one of our custom high flow Carbon Fiber mufflers
Muscle Jet Kit (dynoed 125 RWHP & 80 ft lbs RWTQ)
17 Rear Kosman with 170/60/17 rear Radial
Stock front 18 with 110/80/28 Radial
Muscle Seat (lower Center of Gravity)
Mini Windshield
Double D clutch Mod

Not too many mods all things considered.

The 10.11 / 10.28 sounds like it might be Phil with a 1570 Longrod engine and chain drive - highly modified bike

Phil - if it's you i'm going to try and beat that this year with my 1500 Naturally Aspired engine and Shaft Drive!

11.10 @ 119mph, 1.70 60ft

You're almost there. Got to get the 60' down into the mid 1.6's with that MPH. Has your MPH changed much over your different times? As I recall you were doing about the same MPH but running slower.

Typically, the MPH won't change much and is a good indicator of the potential times you can get in the 1/4 with good 60' time.

1.7 is pretty darn good anyway and better then most here will ever see without slick or wheelie bars.

Later,

Sean,I actually had two runs with 1.65 and 1.64 60 ft times.I am pretty close to the bike potential now.Actually I am at the point where it is hard to get it all together each run.,Launch rpm, quick reaction time and shifting right on the shift light, holding full throttle. This all sounds stupid but it is alot harder than it looks.Waiting 1 1/2 hours between runs insn't helping.I am going to give my carbs another once over, float hieght etc.,Go to the next size smaller mains And try again.

I weigh 245lbs, me and the bike wet (the bike, not me)with full gear at the track scale weigh 875lbs

I am pretty consistently in the 11.50's with 60' in the 1.70-1.80 range.
Trap speeds are around 115-116

My mods are in the gallery section.

My next step is going to be a lighter exhaust, double D clutch mod, rear struts, rear slick and maybe one of the wheelie bars from pingle. (they do make one just for the Max)

I would also like a powershifter but I'm afraid of screwing up the tranny.

I've never strapped the front end?
Any pointers or things to watch out for?

I also need to lose 30lbs but I like my beer too much.

Another option to the double D clutch mod is the PCW clutch spring. Putting two stock springs together works but increases lever pull quite a bit. PCW's spring is 60% stronger and the increase clutch effort isn't nearly as bad.

best pass last week was 11.26 with the slick and bars. Best pass without strapping the front end this time and without the slick or bars was 11.36 and that was hitting the brakes enough at he end to only have 90 mph trap speed (trying to keep from breaking out which didn't matter anyway.). I was holding a wheelie through second on most of my runs (some say it was pretty high but only felt like 1' to me). My best 60' was 1.70

Out effective elevation (counting correction) was 4000 ft which means a .3-.5 tenths slower time then normal.

Fastest bike - 11.26 Sean Morley (muscle kit / Kerker / 15" slick / Bars / double d)
11.36 (muscle kit / Kerker / 17" rear / double d / hitting brakes)

Second fastest Vmax pass was 11.46 - Kevin Rowl (muscle Kit / Kerker / 17" Rear / double d)
Third was 11.60 - Chris Heath (muscle kit / Marks / 17" rear)
Fourth was 11.75 - Chris Joynt (stage seven / Kerker / 17" rear / double d)
Fifth was 11.86 - Scott Peterson (virtually stock bike)

I'll try to find the slips this weekend and let every one know the times for all the measured points.

Sean Morley

OK, got some updated times from the track.

Sean Morley
This particular bike is my 99 test mule. It has my jet kit (Muscle Jet kit), 17" rear Kosman wheel (except with later runs with 15" Firestone slick), Nearly bald 170/60 tire, Kerker header with my titanium baffle/can, stock suspension height and double "d" clutch modification.

My fastest non-slick and bar run was:
Dial in - 11.51
Reaction - .2339 (on a "pro" tree" which is all at once)
60' - 1.7343
330' - 4.7410
1/8th mile - 7.2357
1/8th mph - 98.43
1000' - 9.4312
1000 mph - 110.48
1/4 mile - 11.3671 (note - et and Mph indicate I hit my brakes to keep from "breaking out" which I did anyway dang it)
1/4 mph - 109.20

Best pass with slick and bar:
Dial in - 00.00 time only
Reaction - .2489 (on a "pro" tree" which is all at once)
60' - 1.6438
330' - 4.6192
1/8th mile - 7.1280
1/8th mph - 97.19
1000' - 9.3425
1000 mph - 109.17
1/4 mile - 11.2661
1/4 mph - 116.46

If you compared my other slips you would see that the MPH didn't really vary. This is why you can get a very good indication of the bikes potential time from it's ending MPH. Normally, the weather is better and my MPH is in the 120-121 range which puts my potential in the high 10's which I normally can reach.

You can also tell from my times that getting the first 60' is a big key to getting to the end faster.

Scott Peterson
Here's the fastest run by Scott which was running an essentually stock 1992 with drilled mufflers - "y" removed - and K&N drop in filter - 170/80 Metzler 880 with over 8K on it (so traction wasn't as good as with a new tire but not too bad either). He recently dynoed at 118HP:

Dial in - 00.00 (time only)
Reaction - .3760 (on a "pro" tree" which is all at once)
60' - 1.8484
330' - 4.9901
1/8th mile - 7.6044
1/8th mph - 94.36
1000' - 9.9008
1000 mph - 105.96
1/4 mile - 11.8665
1/4 mph - 114.27

Now based on his ending MPH he has a lot of potential left in the bike. He should have been running 11.50's if he could have had a quicker 60' time. Basically it's unused HP. He used just shy of 100HP to make that run.

Kevin Rowl - 1992 with Muscle Jet kit, Kerker header with custom carbon buffler, 17" rear wheel, MT shootout tire, lowered 2" front and rear, 3" extended swingarm

*Note* this pass is not his fastest (I don't have his slip but it was 11.46 or so) This is for comparative purposes:

Dial in - 00.00 (practice)
Reaction - .2610 (on a "pro" tree" which is all at once)
60' - 1.7153
330' - 4.7455
1/8th mile - 7.3145
1/8th mph - 95.10
1000' - 9.6000
1000 mph - 107.68
1/4 mile - 11.5811
1/4 mph - 113.18

Based on his numbers Kevin was getting nearly the full potential of his bike on the track. He dynoed at 114 and is just about using it all. A very decent 60' time shows in the elapsed time. If you compare the numbers he actually isn't pulling as hard on the top end as the other bikes are. Of course his weight being 40-50lbs lighter then me and scott really helps him here.

Now the fastest bike that went with us was Ryan Ashby. He has an 86 Fazer that we built a engine for. It is no longer a 700cc thanks to the help of a bored and built 88 FZR 1000 engine. He recenently had the bigh number on the dyno with 132HP! Keep in mind that this bike is an easy 200lbs lighter bike not couting that he only wieghs 140lbs. That is a weight advantage!

His best pass of the day was a 10.90 with him drivign it and a 11.11 with me driving it. His lighter weight lets the tire slip a bit on the track while my heavier wieght made it simply do power wheelies in every gear forcing me to let out of it before flipping it over - man that bike is making power! Here's a sample pass from him:

Dial in - 00.00 (practice)
Reaction - .1535 (on a "pro" tree" which is all at once)
60' - 1.8122
330' - 4.8443
1/8th mile - 7.1874
1/8th mph - 104.55
1000' - 9.2228
1000 mph - 118.36
1/4 mile - 11.0016
1/4 mph - 126.37

Now, if you look at his times closely and compare you would see that we have him solidly up to the 330' mark. By that time he is finally in control of the bike and can really open it up. Check out the 18th mile MPH!

Once he gets this bike on a slick and bar it is flat going to fly. I epect to get very low 10's and maybe on a good day and pass a high 9 out of it.

Anyway, there were some other vmaxes there and they were in the 11.60's and 11.70's and both were header, jet kit and 17" wheel equipped bikes.

All in all, it was a very fun 2 days and we'll keep at it.

Guys, keep in mind this was many years ago, (1985) but here is my best day at the track for my 85 bone stock max:

11.27 sec @ 121mph

Missouri elevation??
I weighed between 175-185lbs back then, I think.
stock everything

And, I am very intimidated by a crowd watching me, sorry to say. My reaction times probably sucked accordingly. They didn't have all the fancy reaction times, 60 ft times, 1000 ft times, or any of that back then.

Those were the days.... but I still love to and from work as an older, less prone to drag racing, senior rider.

Should be able to get mine on a track this month hopefully.

If not it'll be december. Got a smart mouth guy on a K2 GSXR 750 wanting to race me.

Hi guys, i've raced cars for years, but racing a bike was so much different. I have only gotten 6 runs on my bike so far but with some practice and good weather I hope to be posting some really good times. The bike with me on it weighs 760lbs and still runs bias tires. Last year I had a kerker exhaust, and a k & n air filter. For this year i've match ported the air intake housing to the air filter. A stage 1 dyna jet kit has been installed, and new sliders (2 old ones were sticking).
My 3 best runs so far are:

July 25, 07' Aug.26,07' Aug.26,07'
9:20p.m. 12:03p.m. 2:17p.m.
r/t .091 .114 .049
60' 1.790 1.751 1.770
330 4.861 4.833 4.886
1/8 7.405 7.418 7.475
mph 95.06 94.29 96.14
1000' 9.651 9.679 9.706
1/4 11.577 11.609 11.610
mph 116.24 115.97 117.81

3000rpm launch on 1st run
3200rpm launch on 2nd run, first to second would shift, had to let off and shift again.
2800rpm launch on 3rd run, track was getting slippery.:thumbs up:

Yo uare launching at about half of the rpm's that you should be.It has to be bogging bigtime.

Need to get that tire warm first too.Get it spinning in 2nd or 3rd.Remember to shift back to 1st before staging.

Thanks for reading that Shawn:eusa_dance:Yeah I do get it back in first before prestaging. I don't do a burnout and that is probley the majority of my problem. I haven't ever done a burnout on a bike so I have that issue if it is gonna spin the tire or grab and do a wheelie:biglaugh: When I get to the track this year I do plan on starting to do that. Any tips you have for doing the burnout on the bike would be helpful. Thank you one again for taking the time to read my post.
