I have a rattling/grinding sound that I think is coming from the rear drive shaft. With the bike not running and in neutral, I hear a rattling/grind noise when I push the bike forward. But not when I push it backward. I cant identify anything externally that would cause the sound and I cant record it to post up.

Any ideas? Is the drive shaft going out?

Thanks

Might have a broken pinion gear in the rear end. Will need to take the rear end off and look under the base of the driveshaft and see if that tensioning nut is broken off.

Could it be as simple as a brake pad rubbing? Or maybe a noise in one of the rear wheel bearings? Simple enough to check all of those before pulling the hub and/or drive shaft.

Try to pin-point the noise. Mechanic's stethecope from HF or you can improvise with a long screwdriver or any rod , handle against your ear with the blade against the machine. Rubber hose works well sometimes too.

Sean nailed it. Now trying to find the part locally.

If not available near you I do have some on hand here.
