I have a 2005 max with a strange problem. I'll try to give my interpretation of the problem with my limited knowledge. If I go through the gears gently the problem doesn't show up. If I nail it hard, it appears like I am tapping the clutch. The rpm goes up quickly and then it starts pulling. Right you thinking I have a clutch problem, but there is more to it. IT ONLY DOES IN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. Can anyone tell me if 2nd & 3rd gear use a different shift fork that the other three gears or do 2 & 3 use the same gear. I've talked to a few of my vmax friends, and they haven't a clue. I was hoping to get my max ready for the Deal's Gap rally in October, but to me it sounds like I'm looking at pulling an engine and splitting some cases. Thanks in advance for any advice? John
 
I'm wanting to say that 2 and 5 are connected, and that if your having a problem with 2...it will show up on 5 as well.

This is all that I could find about 2nd and 5th. This is from a post about upgrades to various years on Vmax.

A. Second Gear changed to stronger design in some point of '85. - Note 2nd gear and 5th gear will need to be upgraded together if you discover you have the early design. Shimming was also added to take out slop from the transmission gears.

When was the last time that you bled the clutch, and was it bled thourghly?

Sometimes there can also be a problem where the return hole in the clutch master cylinder gets a bit clogged, and it wont allow fluid to return to the master cylinder, and it makes the clutch feel like it is slipping. For that you would take like a small piece of wire and push it into the return hole. It is the LITTLE hole to the inside of the hole with the check ball. It is easy to over look that small hole.

Sure it isn't clutch slipping? Try fifth gear, keep it steady about 3,5-4k and then accelerate hard, if it slips it will slip, especially at the point when vboost starts to open.
 
It's either in gear or it isn't.
If it is jumping out due to bad dog teeth then it's a bunch of neutrals.
The way you're describing it sounds like it's still in gear but the revs are higher sometimes when you gun it but otherwise ok although seems to be in 2/3 rd.
Got to be the clutch slipping.
 
+1 on the clutch. Like Eric said, it may not be releasing also.
OK, maybe I don't explain very well. The clutch doesn't give a shit whether you are in 1st or 4th. If I can launch in first gear and burn rubber for 20 feet, I don't think the clutch is slipping. I ran almost to red line in first and no problem. In 2nd, I nail it and at some point the engine revs for a second and then keeps pulling til it does again. 3rd gear gives the same problem as 2nd. 4th & 5th from 3k rpm I ran them to 80 mph and 100 mph and no PROBLEM! I'm thinking bent shift fork or something to do with moving the gears to their proper position. That's the best I can do to explain my concern. If that is what's wrong, will I further damage something if I continue riding it?
 
Clutch slippage is most noticeable at higher gears, I only noticed it at 5th gear when I slammed it from 100-110kph. If you have something wrong with your gears, you would be having hard time shifting, lots of neutrals, funny noises and probably metal bits etc. in oil.

I'd say ride it, and when that clutch gets really bad then change discs and mod it as the way you like. I put in 8 full discs, got kinda edgy but grips great.

If you can't adequately string some words together to explain it then no one can answer it. Best I can tell from your post it is the clutch or clutch engagement.

The bike is most certainly not going to jump in and out of gear. It's impossible. And if it did it would be banging, clanging, and breaking bits and put you on the side of the road immediately.


Your ignoring a valuable resource.

And also asking a question with a preconceived notion of what the answer is and refusing to hear anything else.

Let me explain.

You made the statement that if you can do a rolling burnout in first that it could not be the clutch.

Anyone who understands drive line theory knows that first gear places the LEAST amount of stress on the driveline, the higher the gear the higher the stress when at that torque peak around 5500 and accelerating.

A clutch that is beginning to degrade WILL ALWAYS slip easier in the higher gears when placed under heavy load.

Running it to 100 doesn't mean anything either. It's HOW you ran it to 100

So by the statement you made about first gear burnouts it just shows your ignorance.

With your touchy ass attitude I say good bye, good riddance, and good luck fixing it with your limited skills.

You're right I left school when I was 5 I think, or did I even go to school, can't remember. I struggle to tie my own shoelaces.

You come here asking advice/opinions and when it doesn't suit you, we're all dumb.
I hope a transmission specialist fixes your unique gear teeth problem where they magically slip about their engagement all whilst they still remain in mesh.

On the other hand it could be the clutch.

On a lighter note, we don't run into trannys out here in the country.
 
All I can think of is first poster bashing in some poor motorcycle shop, when dude behind desk has proposed that issue is very certainly just worn-out clutch, nothing serious.. And then, BOOOM MOTHAF**A!!!

Since your bike is a piece of shit & you already know it has a bad transmission can I buy it for 500 bucks so I can fix it real cheap.
 
Man...I had a problem similar to this. My clutch would slip if the bike was hot....but not if it was cold. This was after new disks, bead blasted steels, and DOUBLE retaining spring. I bled the clutch AGAIN....and took a small wire to the return hole. Fixed after that.

You try to help some people.....:ummm:
 
Was just looking at this thread and he had exact same problem I had on my 2005 and he was right its not the clutch.
The dogs on the 2nd gear were worn to the point it would jump the dogs making it feel like you were hitting patches of ice on hard acceleration in second gear. I had to have morley recut the trans to fix it.
Its a frustrating problem because everything points to a clutch but fourth gear is fine... Expensive fix to boot.
