has anyone replaced them without removing the heads?
would it be possible to just remove the crank and slide the rods down enough just to expose the bottom of the piston and remove/install this way?

I can't remember if I tried it yet but want to say I did and it would not come out? Maybe it would come out but required rotating the rod once it's off the crank. I don't think it will as I had to change one out in the frame earlier this year and ended up pulling the head (rear head) which I found out will come out with it in the chassis.

I'll let you know how it goes. thanks for the tip on the rear head removal. I usually have to remove both and only once had to remove the front only and the motor was out anyway.

well it looks like only cylinders 1&4 can be done and the piston would have to be rotated a bit in order to remove the pin. I was looking for a short cut, saving time and the cost of replacing head gaskets.
