Missing oil filter spring..

Hey guys I was doing the first oil change on this 88 I bought and when I took apart the oil filter I noticed there was no spring and washer behind it..is the spring absolutely Necessary what is it’s purpose?

It seals the oil filter gasket to the engine block for proper oil filtration. You want it. I suspect Sean Morley may have a pair of the pieces for you.
