    Parasitic Battery Drain

Easy check if you have a short circuit in you system. Ignition off. Remove the negative wire from the battery terminal. Now touch the wire back to the terminal. I there is any spark, you have a short circuit in your system that is draining the battery.

    dead cylinder

Just finished working on a 96 VMAX with the same problem. A/F mixture needle on left front carb seized. Mixture too rich, plug fouls. Easy Fix. I changed the main jet of that carb to a smaller size main jet about 10 pts. smaller. Now plug burns brown, no more dead cylinder. The size depends...

    This is strange

The voltage on the battery usually drops when cranking the engine. However, the voltage should go up to at least 14+ volts at rpm over 3000. If it does not the rectifier/regulator is suspect. You could get a reading of 13 volts out of newly charge battery but it will not crank the motor...

    Replacing Stator

Here is the Philippines were original gaskets are hard find and very expensive, I make my own. I buy gasket material by the yard, quite inexpensive at wholesale stores. I lay the stator or clutch side of the engine against the gasket material. I outline the shape of the stator or clutch cover...

    No power after battery change

Try cleaning the copper ends of the - & + terminal wires. Junk the nuts and bolts that came with battery and replace them with Allen type stainless steel nuts. Also cut 1/2 in of plastic tubing that came with the battery and place it behind the nut. Makes installing the bolt a lot easier.

Lost my brake pedal, than came back

While test driving 2 different Vmaxes I serviced, I lost the rear brakes after aggressive use of the rear brakes. It appears that the current owners have not changed the brake fluid since acquiring the bikes. My solution was to flush the old brake fluid, and replace with DOT4. I recommended...

    How to change main jets

Just did carb overhaul for a clients bike last weekend. #1 carb a/f mixture needle is stuck so I changed to a smaller main jet to lean the a/f mix. Worked out okay. (For main jets, I buy them off auto supply stores, they come in sizes from 70 to 200 and cost .50US each.) Main jets on most...

Middle Drive Shaft Nut Snap ???

This happened on a 96Vmax I was working on. I went to a used part shop and was told I had to buy the whole differential assembly for 18,000pesos, a little over 300US. No way! Not in the Philippines. I took the drive shaft to a machine shop, had the machinist drill a threaded hole where the...

    Broken Pinion Shaft....What now?

I had the same problem with a 91 Vmax. The final gear drive assembly was making a horrible sound when decelerating. Somehow the nut holding the pinion gear was not punched in to lock it so in time it loosened stressed the gear and it finally sheared. I checked all over (I'm in the Philippines)...

R1 Voltage Regulator / Rectifier Upgrade

The last time the R/R on my Virago went kaput, I went to a junk yard and looked at the R/R from Japanese made cars. I found one and it was slightly bigger than the OE but the amperage rating is higher. The wiring is a little different. The Yamaha R/R is body ground so I grounded the green of...

    Plug color for a novice

From my experience in tuning carbs, I have just done one for a 96 VMax, when the bike will only idle with the choke on, the culprit is plugged idle/pilot jets. This jet has a very tiny orifice and easy gets block by dirt or shellacking of gasoline. You have to take the carbs apart and remove...

    Lighting in Scoops

I plan on doing the same thing. However I will be using high intensity LED. I would drill holes on the metal screen on the scoop the size of the LED. Since each LED bulb use 3 volts, series 4 bulbs so you can hook it up directly to the power source so without a resistor. Use a glue gun to...
