    Brake Pads

Sorry to ask, but I need to order REAR brake pads for my 1986 Vmax. My local parts dealer needs a part number? He says he doesn't have any kind of parts catalogue. Anybody ?

    Choke kills motor

I live in a warm climate and my 1986 Vmax starts straight up, every time without using the choke, even after several days not used. If I use the choke the bike will not start and if I use the choke after the engine has started, the bike immediately cuts out. Any ideas. The bike runs great, but...

    Stinking Rich.

OK. I've always found that rear cylinders do run a little hotter than the front cylinders anyway, due to their position. So keeping the rear cylinders a little richer does make sense. I need to order the jets this week. Is the census of opinion that I use 152.5 in the rear and 150 in the front...

Thanks for the info. I'm checking to see if I an get the right 152.5 jets locally.

    Stinking Rich.

We figured out that the fuel leaks on 2 of the carbs was coming from the drain screw, as the 'o' rings were worn out. We changed the 'o' rings on all four and this stopped the leak. When I got the bike it had a modified exhaust system and it appears that the carbs were re-jetted to compensate. I...

    Stinking Rich.

yeah...way too expensive to send them and get them back here to the Philippines. I'll get a local mechanic to check the floats. Fingers crossed, that would be an easy fix. Mechanics here are not like in the U.S. They don't have the experience of working on bikes like this, or the tools to do the...

    Stinking Rich.

I'm not unfortunately, but my bike is. I noticed that my '86 smelled a little rich at idle. I decided to turn in the air/fuel mix screws to lean it out a little. I turned them all the way in and immediately noticed that on three of the carbs there was little effect, it still continued to run on...

    i CHAIN LUBE

Chain lube contains 'thinners', so that it can be sprayed out of the can. People make the mistake of lubing the chain before they ride. The best time to lube the chain is the day before or the night before, to allow all the thinners to evaporate overnight, which just leaves the lube on the chain...

    A Fuel Question?

Living in the Philippines, most of the forecourts offer a choice of either 91 regular or 95 premium. Some also have 97. All the fuel here has an additive of 10% ethanol. Unfortunately, they add a horrible red dye to the fuel which causes carb contamination problems over time. Since I have owned...

    Randomly dying at operating temp

I will also add. When i had this problem, my fuel pump would click for a few seconds when I turned on the ignition, but the fuel pump should also 'click' about once every 3 seconds when the engine is running. Usually, you don't hear this as it is dampened by the seat and the noise of the engine...

    Randomly dying at operating temp

I had an almost identical problem. It would run fine for a while and then die as if running out of fuel. I was also going to change the fuel pump, but someone on the board suggested I swap out the fuel pump relay first, as its cheaper than a new pump! I changed the relay and the problem was...

    New Battery? No spark?

Now that I have removed the kick-stand relay the bike starts fine. I took the bike for a ride yesterday and it dropped down onto just 3 cylinders. I checked and found that the front/left cylinder wasn't firing. On inspection, this was caused by a bad spark plug. I changed the plug and it's back...

    New Battery? No spark?

As suggested by some other board members, the fault WAS the kick stand relay. Many thanks to all that offered advice. Kick stand relay removed....bike running like a Swiss watch!!

    New Battery? No spark?

When your side stand relay wasn't working, would the bike still crank over. I didn't consider the relay as I thought it would have 'killed' the starter motor? The starter is working fine on mine. I've traced the continuity of the 12V from the battery to the CDi and from the CDi to the coils...

    New Battery? No spark?

On my '86 bike the side stand switch has been by-passed. If the relay was defective I thought this would have prevented the bike from 'cranking' the same as the kill switch? There's no problem cranking, the starter is turning the motor over. Can you tell me where the side stand relay is located...
