V-rod owners imprssions of the New V-max

Still have it! Just pulled the carbs out for the X time in 20 years. Kinda stumped on how to solve this one; the vacuum petcock leaks despite rebuilding and the carb float bowls overflow despite the most anal retentive cleaning I'm capable of. What scares me more is the vmax is next up...

V-rod owners imprssions of the New V-max

This winter I went to the local Harley dealer and very nearly picked up a Night Rod Special. I had credit setup, I was going to trade my vmax in for it. I'm soooo glad I didn't. I had the 09 vmax in the back of my mind the whole time. I knew it was coming out, but I wasn't sure when. It...

The OFFICIAL "What I think of the K9 VMax" thread

So has anyone put $1000 down for one yet? I'm curious if there's demand enough that it's even too late to get one of the 1st 2500. I'm also curious if the dealers are selling for sticker or trying to gouge. I SO want this bike. -fatz p.s. When you shut it off, the display also says "see...

    Coughing/Sputtering

I bought a 1997 max that was in storage for quite awhile. I've had the carbs off three times. 1) Fresh gas in the tank, turned the key for the first time. One of the floats was stuck. Pulled the carb bank, cleaned the offender, slapped it back together. 2) It ran fine for about...

The rear axel torque finally BUSTED

No, that's wrong--it's clear as day in the manual. Yamaha specifies 85 ft-lbs OR 120 Nm. There's a pic in my original post.

The rear axel torque finally BUSTED

Which is interesting for two different reasons: 1) They eat Royale's With Cheese for lunch at the factory where VMAXs are built and; 2) 110 newtons comes out to about 75 lb ft. Somebody forgot to convert that spec from metric to english... Edit: As a matter of fact, here's a picture of...

Top 3 ways to get burned on a used V-Max?

Look for 'out of place' maintenance. A new front tire on a 3000 mile bike is red flag for instance. Look for burnt tire on the top of the swing arm pivot up in front, etc. Check the brake caliper bolts to see if they've been off--indication of front pads being replaced. This is a wishy...

    Exhaust pressure..something wierd.

I know the drill on syncing, plugs, compression yadda yadda yadda. That's not what I was getting at. I'm curious if it's an idiosyncracy of the engine design. I was thinking one side might scavenge better than the other because of the timing order.

    Exhaust pressure..something wierd.

I'm still getting used to my bike (97 V-MAX). I've owned quite a few bikes and torn down (and usually put back together) quite a few as well. So I'm out fiddling with my bike. Tightening screws, etc. I started the bike and just for the hell of it I put my hands over the exhaust--Kerker...

    Another Newbie

Thanks for the warm reception, guys. I didn't synch the carbs--I just pulled the one stuck carb and cleaned it up. I'm sure this thing needs a sync and a good tune. As big of a pain it was to pull out the carbs, it is nice having clear access to the vacuum ports and throttle plate...

    Good Looking Bike

Funny. That's about what Russell Mitchell (the Exile Choppers guy) said about the American bike scene. He basically said the bikes are all pimped out; all form, no function. Ridiculous paintjobs and pointless chrome on everything. Personally I hope Yamaha buids a 6 cylinder touring bike...

    Another Newbie

Thanks for the advice. For once, I'm one step ahead of somebody. No big deal pulling it out of storage (for once). I've dealt with it before. Only one of the four carbs needed help; the rest were fine. The one that needed help had a stuck float needle. I wasn't ready for what I had to...

    Another Newbie

Hey! I just bought a 1997 V-Max used and drove it for the first time yesterday. The bike was stored for several years but only had 4,000 miles on it. More importantly, the price was right. I'm glad I bought it. It's the first non-sportbike I've ever owned. It's a little more cramped...
