Those Trapps are not welded to the bikes pipes. The weld you see (the black painted weld) is stock on the Vmax. The Trapps are just slip-fitted to those pipes, and when installed they expose the Yamaha factory weld like you see. The stock system has this kind of chrome cover on the rear pipe...

I have that May '85 issue of Cycle. I'll never give up that mag :) Makes me fall in love with my bike again each time I go to the basement to look at that mag and read through what people first thought of that 'Goliath.'

Don't forget about the swingarm bearings and torque. 75mph for a Vmax is nothing. If you get the front sorted, don't forget the rear. And good tires of course. You'll never worry about 75mph again. Something radically wrong if you feel loss of control at a bit more than that speed.

I heard that it was just the outlet cans and not the headers. Then Yamaha made them slightly more restrictive for noise compliance after the '85 model year, but also upped the Vboost butterflies by 2mm.

Moving to a higher elevation (thinner air) will richen the mixture out a bit, not make it lean out. Vinnie

Digging up an old thread here and providing an update: I've put almost 6000 miles on that Z8 and the Ultra ME888 I spoke about above. Both tires are now near their limit, tread thickness-wise. Few obervations; -Z8 still handles well and is not squared off. -Z8 gave me confidence throughout...
