    Age of Vmax owners

I'm 53 and bought my Vmax in 2014 and It has been my favorite bike to ride so far. I've been riding since 13 started with mini bikes, then dirt bikes, enduros, and then in to street bikes.

    Diagnose symptoms

Update 4th of July weekend, I took the bike out a few times and it started right up, never stalled and ran the smoothest its ever run since i've owned the bike really. I couldn't find any leaks of anti-freeze or water or oil at all, that's pretty good for a 31 year old bike in my opinion. Now I...

    Diagnose symptoms

I've replaced the thermo switch and have tested the electric fan by passing the switch and it comes on. I just haven't heard it come on by itself yet for 4 years I owned the bike. I replaced all the antifreeze and the overflow tank doesn't leak and the gauge doesn't get in the red. But shouldn't...

    Diagnose symptoms

Thanks for your input and suggestions. I did a search and found the Borg Warner thermostat number and the thermostat switch replacements that will make the fan come on sooner. I really don't want to buy them now as I just replaced the factory ones last year the thermal switche and thermal unit...

    Diagnose symptoms

Well that is not helpful when the boiling point of liquid is 212° my bike must have reached 221° several times but my fan never turns on. Could it be my thermostat possibly?

    Diagnose symptoms

Update today I finally had time to really diagnose my bike. It started up fine but then it just died by itself while idling, so I did a few things to it to make it run a lot better. First off, I didn't notice it before but one of the rear coils was unplugged,,,, my bad,, so i plugged...

    Diagnose symptoms

Thanks for your advice. I am going to check if there is a leak first for sure. I read a post where someone had a similar leak from the water jacket outlet in the head above the plug, is this common? I would like to get new plug wires but wouldn't it be better to upgrade to COP's instead while im...

    Diagnose symptoms

I would like some advice for a few symptoms that i have on my 88 vmax. The bike starts great when cold (new AGM battery) and (new stator) linstalled last year. But after its hot it doesn't want to start or stay running. After hard starting it then sputters and backfires mostly through the front...

    Stator no good

Update - I took Sean's advice and today I cut about 1/2 inch off the rear spark plug wires and put them back in the coils. I changed the spark plugs and backed the air fuel mixture screws out about 1 turn for each carburetor, ........and Viola! I could instantly feel the difference in the...

    Stator no good

Sean you are correct, it was 89 inch lbs. not ft. lbs. I checked the Clymer manual again I'm used to working on cars. So should I back them off a little now? I took the bike for a short ride but it was sputtering and backfiring at low rpm and would almost stall, I had to rev it up first before i...

    Stator no good

Hi Sean, I got the voltage regulator from you, it was an upgrade to a newer one with the fins. And i'm pretty sure the manual said ft. lbs. I'm just not sure why i'm still only getting 12.5-13.0 volts to the battery from the stator. Can it be something else? I checked (measured)the ground...

    Stator no good

Update - I finished putting in the new stator and gasket, boy what a nightmare! All 3 of the stator bolts were basically stuck in the threads so all the philips heads got stripped so I had to use my trusty impact driver with a philips bit. I got them out but they were tough! So I ordered all...

    Stator no good

I am still waiting for the gasket to come but I did get new bolts today, not stainless, but I still may go that route. As far as the stator goes, yes it does have 3ft of wires with it and the connectors and crimps but I will take you guys advice and solder them and shrink wrap them instead of...

    Stator no good

I received my new stator from RMStator and I am in the middle of the install and I have a few questions. First, can you tell by the pic if the stator looks bad or burnt? It does look a little burnt or darker on the bottom right side (4 o'clock position)of the stator. Second, does the gear (the...
