    Big Blue Motorcycle Lift

I have a Big Blue lifter and I use it for my Gen 2 and my Triumph Rocket 3R. They supplied a specific kit for use on the Gen 2. I have not used it on my Gen 1 because of course it has a centrestand and I have a hydraulic motorcycle bench if I want to lift it higher. I am away from home at the...

I've screwed something up -Idle issue

I can't help thinking that it is no coincidence that it is the front left cylinder running weak and that is the only cylinder which does not have a blind plug on the vacuum take off. You have mentioned that of course, but not whether you have checked out the various connections for that vacuum...

    engine bearings

Yamaha used to publish the size of shafts, housings and bearings in parts books such as that for the XS1100 and for that model at least the blue bearing was the thickest. Table two here appears to be incomplete, but you can see enough to know that blue is thickest anyway.

    Hello Vmaxxers from Sydney

You can ride around the outback and pretend to be Mad Max on a gen 2!

    Loose part?

    Hope it goes well!

    Loose part?

There is a screw on the inside of the clutch cover that hold this secondary cover in place. It pulls the cover onto a rubber grommet that would normally stop it rotating. Maybe the screw is loose or missing, or the rubber grommet has broken up?

    cam sprockets 86' 1200

Here is a picture that may help as long as you don't ask me how I broke that camshaft!

Back to the Vmax at last!😄.

They are a bit special. Triumph did it so much better with the second generation of Rockets. I wish that Yamaha had been so bold...

Back to the Vmax at last!😄.

I am also lucky enough to have gen 1 and gen 2 bikes. I rebuilt/restored the former from the ground up a few years ago. The gen 2 is a better bike in every way than the gen 1, but my gen 2 was not built by me and nothing beats the pleasure of riding a bike that you built yourself, you know...

They say I am crazy 🤷🏻‍♂️

Are you not there yet? I have been married 35 years and my wife says that she dares not ask me whether I love the bikes more than her because she is afraid that she knows the answer!

    Magnetic Oil Drain Plug Source

I have used magnetic drain plugs on the engine, middle drive and final drive on my XS1100 for 45 years and they have not lost magnetism. They always come out with a bit of sludge. There are loads of 14 x 1.5 magnetic drain plugs on eBay.

    How Observant Are We?

Fork sliders, fork brace, tacho/fuel gauge cover, maybe bottom yoke?

Well yes there are always plenty of answers here - but only if you ask a question!

    The beast is almost ready

Looks very clean and black! When I restored my Vmax I had the crankcases and cylinder heads powder coated, but then removed the coating by hand from the "fins" as you can see in the picture on the left. I think that it emphasises the V a little more, but I do like the solid black you have chosen...

What did you do to your Vmax today? Part 2

Most caliper rebuild kits supply the two O rings that seal the two caliper halves. I have split several of this design caliper on my Vmax 1200, XJ900 and XJ750 and I did not find any problem doing so. Just make sure that male and female threads for the two M10 bolts are OK (and use Loctite), the...

    Reasons to remove the clutch?

I would replace the friction plates at least because MM is right (as usual!) the clutches do tend to slip with wear. I rode a friend's Vmax with clutch slip and it was hilarious in a way because you would open the throttle, the clutch would slip so the engine revs higher, the vboost valves open...

    Help me someone

MaxMidnight is right - you can spend lots of money to make a Vmax faster, but if you want a fast bike the cheapest way is to just go out and buy one. There are plenty out there a lot faster than a Vmax1200. You could try a VMAX1700 for a start...
