    The beast is almost ready

Looks very clean and black! When I restored my Vmax I had the crankcases and cylinder heads powder coated, but then removed the coating by hand from the "fins" as you can see in the picture on the left. I think that it emphasises the V a little more, but I do like the solid black you have chosen...

What did you do to your Vmax today? Part 2

Most caliper rebuild kits supply the two O rings that seal the two caliper halves. I have split several of this design caliper on my Vmax 1200, XJ900 and XJ750 and I did not find any problem doing so. Just make sure that male and female threads for the two M10 bolts are OK (and use Loctite), the...

    Reasons to remove the clutch?

I would replace the friction plates at least because MM is right (as usual!) the clutches do tend to slip with wear. I rode a friend's Vmax with clutch slip and it was hilarious in a way because you would open the throttle, the clutch would slip so the engine revs higher, the vboost valves open...

    Help me someone

MaxMidnight is right - you can spend lots of money to make a Vmax faster, but if you want a fast bike the cheapest way is to just go out and buy one. There are plenty out there a lot faster than a Vmax1200. You could try a VMAX1700 for a start...

    Rear axle bolt

The missing part is actually shown on the rear brake diagram (which doesn't help) and is #7, part number 90387 200J2.

    1989 Vmax Resurrection Thread

I stand to be corrected, but I don't recognise those mystery parts as being from a Vmax and I have done a nut and bolt restoration on mine. What makes you think that they are from a Vmax?

    Rear axle seal/collar???

It is part number 2H7 25315 00. Number 2 on the diagram above. Without it the wheel locks up as you say...

Ring Nut Wrench Yu–33975 Purchase, Rent, Borrow

I am the same as you, I like everything to be to specification and by the book. Trouble is that 36 ftlbs for Vmax head bearings does not work in the real world - for me anyway. I found that the way to adjust the (new) head bearings on my totally rebuilt bike was to just carefully use a hammer...

    Yet another "oil light" discussion:

I agree with Max Midnight. Many gen 1 bikes were sold over a 22 year model life and if the O ring was a problem we would know about it by now. I bought my gen 1 with about 35000 miles on it and completely stripped the engine to get all covers and cases powder coated for cosmetic reasons. O ring...

    Gen 1 V-Max exhaust, a modern thread.

I have had the Black Widow system (front and rear headers and mufflers) on my gen 1 for the past 5 years on standard jets and other carburetor settings and engine runs perfectly. I really do mean perfectly. Quite a lot noisier than standard. Have not dynoed the bike with this system however and...

    Weird carb sync results

Maybe check the vacuum hose connector stub #2 for foreign material? If there is any kind of restriction it may cause this lack of response.

    CrankCase Cover 2 question

I had a similar issue on an XJ900S which has a bolt behind the cylinders with a copper washer. I could torque it up as much as I dared and it would still let through an oil mist. I solved it by simply using a thinner copper washer which could distort enough under pressure to make the seal.

    Deleting middle drive?

The middle gearbox turns the drive 90 degrees. Without it your output shaft could only then be used with a chain drive, but that is probably what you want?

engine cutting out and now it died on hwy???

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. I had similar symptoms on my FJR1300 and turns out there was a filter inside the fuel tank that gets clogged up. Cleaned that and it has been fine ever since. So a new fuel pump may solve your problem, if not just look at every stage of the fuel system from the...

clacking noise in middle gear area

You definitely have to split the cases to remove the output shaft which is why there is no specific procedure, it's just part of the transmission overhaul after you split the cases. If your problem occurs at a higher speed it could be quite hazardous so best fix it good and proper.

    General maintenance

A gen 1 Vmax is surely approaching self awareness?
