I finally had it with my crappy charging

I would agree, sounds like the R/R is possibly bad.

I finally had it with my crappy charging

My buddy's 86 after fixing this stator connector now is 14.25 at idle with fan off and 13.95 with fan running at idle. It used to be 13.2 with no fan and low 12's with fan on. Mine currently is 13.95 at idle fan off and 13.00 with fan on and I did the crimp fix, I'm definately going to look into...

I finally had it with my crappy charging

This was the exact problem with my friend's 86 Vmax! He did the crimp fix, grounded the regulator, new battery, but when he looked at the stator connector it was corroded and partially melted. He cut the stock one off and replaced it with individual insulated blade connectors and he too got...

    Baffling carb issues....

Problem solved! I gave it a new set of Champion plugs and richened the pilots up to 3 1/2 turns each. I was suspecting maybe too lean along with possibly an iffy plug. It now idles great even when the temp guage gets to where the fan kicks on and never misses a beat and while it's this hot it...

    Baffling carb issues....

SpecOps13, I totally agree that the stock configuration of triggering the fan is way too late and if you're stuck in stop n go traffic on a hot day the fan runs constantly trying desparetly to bring down the temp rather then coming on sooner and not allowing the bike to get to "core meltdown...

    Baffling carb issues....

Grimmie, I'm leaning towards an ignition issue at the moment either plugs and or wires. Unfortunately today was the first chance I had to try to score a new set of plugs and the place I went to was out of stock of the NGK's these bikes take and they didn't sell another equal brand, they did...

    Baffling carb issues....

Did you add a bypass switch to ur bike because it acts like mine and the original poster's or did you do it out of general purpose and if you left the bike stock it would be able to handle the higher temps and maintain idle?

    Baffling carb issues....

The coolant was replaced about 4 yrs ago when I had to do the water pump seal. Do you know if vapor lock is a common ailment for Vmax and if so is there a correctable solution? Thanks for the reply!

    Baffling carb issues....

I realize this post is over 1 year old but did this problem ever get solved? This is exactly what's happening to mine now and I'm poking around here to get some ideas. Mine also is pure stock and is a 99, it last was ran in the Spring for about 40 miles where I got a fresh tank of gas and it ran...

12.8v-13v+ at idle, but less as RPMs rise...

The charging system is in parallel with the battery, however, the reason why the charging system puts out 14 to 14.5 volts is to push positive current flow into the battery overcoming it's surface voltage while suppling the vehicle with it's electrical needs. This is the case with a car...

12.8v-13v+ at idle, but less as RPMs rise...

Your charging system is not working, the battery is simply a storage device, a properly functioning 12 volt charging system should be 14 to 14.5 volts.

    Replacement Instrument Panel Lenses

It was a matter of economics, I didn't see the sense in spending $50 or so dollars, as a posted quote, for an item that's contained in it that should run a buck. I was just making sure these lenses weren't sold seperately or as an item offered by a third party after market. I found replacement...

    Replacement Instrument Panel Lenses

Anybody know of a source for these panel lenses without buying a whole Instrument Assembly from eBay? I tried several Yamaha OEM parts sources and the best I can source there is the bulbs. I Googled many different queries and I can't locate anything.

    Vmax Carb Problems

Went back at it today and went a new approach, I was questioning my Pilot Mixture screw settings of 2 1/4 turns because I noticed I had the Idle Speed screw wound higher than normal and I was starting to think this is the real source of the hanging idle. I wound down the Idle Speed to a spot...

    Vmax Carb Problems

Okay, I just finished ripping these things totally apart and cleaned the H*** out of them. I went with your advice against soaking them in carb dip and manually cleaned them. I even took the Pilot Jets out of the JET BLOCKS and cleaned them along with thoroughly cleaning the JB's and every...

    Vmax Carb Problems

The diaphrams were in good shape and I thoroughly cleaned and lubricated the slides with WD-40. Nice documentation/pictures of your carb project. What problems were you having to make you do this? I was actually going to let the carb bodies soak in Gunk Carb Cleaner, I guess it's like Safety...

    Vmax Carb Problems

Yea I'm kinda leaning this way, I was trying to avoid the "Full Monty" cleaning and short cut this if possible but it's looking like I have no choice. I did pick up the Gunk Carb Cleaner that comes in the gallon paint can with the parts bin for this job. I was concerned about breaking the carbs...

    Vmax Carb Problems

This is an issue for me because I don't know if it's a rich or lean condition. I just got done messing around with it some more and set the screws to the original 1 3/4 out along with dumping 5 oz. of this Sea Foam that's been recommended. I started it and ran it for 1/2 hour in the driveway, it...
