Lowering the rear 1.5" by cutting some of the spring anyone do it ?

Another reason not to cut the spring is due to the set length of the spring (installed) being less than the free length of the spring (uninstalled). The reason for this is to place enough preload on the spring as to keep it located properly in the suspension component (fork or shock)...

    head shake over a bump

In my opinion head shake comes from several different factors, and often people over look the routine in search of the grander issues. On sportbikes the common response to any of it is "get a steering damper." Nice to see actual discussion on it, rather than the general put a band aid on it...

    USD forks?

    Try inverted forks.

    drag bars

This might be your best option. I tried drag bars on mine, but switched back to OEM after a long bout with adjusting them so nothing would hit. But by the time I got them where they wouldn't hit anything, I wasn't really crazy about the look and feel. I think the superbike bars would have...

    Vmax commercial from the 80's

Very cool. Part of the reason I wanted one back in 85 when they came out. Combine that with the fact that Yamaha kept to that design for over 20 years and you have the reason I bought mine (finally) and will probably keep it forever.

r6/1 gold dots better than blue??? hmmmm

I have the radial 4 pots on my 2004 R1. The radial 4 pots on my 2005 R6 (silver pots) . The axial 4 pots (from a 2002-2003 R1) on my FZR1000. The Vmax has the stock brakes as does the Warrior, but I'm considering changes.

r6/1 gold dots better than blue??? hmmmm

Never heard that about the pot colors. I have the YZF R1 4 pots on my FZR until I can rebuild the OEM. But when I take them off I'll have to pull them apart to see. I have the gold pots on my R1, but they are the 04 radial mount.

    Checking/adding fork air

What are your static and free sag numbers? Where is the travel becoming harsh? In my limited experience with damping rod forks, harshness is more a function of oil weight/level than spring rate, with a straight rate spring. Mind you, even a straight rate spring in a fork will net a...

93 Vmax with 93 FZR1000 Front Forks Questions

No offense taken at all. I really should have stated USD, because they are not cartridge. And I agree 100% on not swapping for the FZR forks. I might be inclined to consider YZF 750 or R1 forks, but all of them would cause significant lowering. A well tuned emulator/spring/oil swap would...

93 Vmax with 93 FZR1000 Front Forks Questions

I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience. I should have said USD or upside down. But I did go on to say that internally they are the same (damping rod forks).

    Fork seals

How many miles/years since the bushings were replaced? I see a lot of forks that have leaking seals, and when I go to change them the bushings are wore. That could allow the fork to move forward/backward and cause excessive wear to the seals. Another thing on conventional forks is to ensure...

93 Vmax with 93 FZR1000 Front Forks Questions

Have you been able to get anywhere with this? If I could offer my opinion I would suggest not changing one damping rod suspension for another. Regardless of being inverted cartridge, internally they are essentially the same as your stock Vmax forks. So for either case you'd be looking at some...

My two babes... Yeti and Grizzly

Sorry. All I typically discuss is suspension and track time and I have a bad tendency to do it where ever folks ask questions. I'll behave now.

Ah, I see. Static sag is a relative starting point, that is supposed to be repeatable, not so much a definite. If your static and free sags are within the correct range, or percentage of travel they let us know the spring is appropriate for that bike/rider combo. And the damping curves should...

Who's suspension tuning theories? I've read a few books, and I do bit of installing. I'm a Race Tech dealer and I work on all kinds of machines. But I do not routinely swap parts on bikes. I rebuild the stock parts to do what the owner wants. 1.2kg/mm is a pretty heavy spring. Might be...

My two babes... Yeti and Grizzly

Absolutely. I install about 30-50 valve sets a year. But I pay different rates. Not sure that by saying the rebound rates should be about the same I was implying that setting the front and rear the same. But with regard to damping I stand on what I posted. The front and rear should respond...

My two babes... Yeti and Grizzly

Sounds like you are on the right track with the rear. Have to spring/valve for the direct connection vice the linked one. I'm not too sure I agree with the ATF approach (all respect Sean, you know I respect the heck out of you). But using fluid damping (typically a speed change) to address...

My two babes... Yeti and Grizzly

Cool. I'd have to call the guys at the shop, but I think you are probably bit oversprung in the rear. The front, I would recommend somewhere between the stock and 1.0 kg/mm straight rate springs. You might be ok with the stock valving, but if you feel the need to go above 10wt oil, consider...

Pretty cool setup. What front and rear sag numbers are you getting with that suspension?
