The problem I have had with ethanol fuel is it attracts water and allows it to be in solution with the gasoline. Nothing corrodes an aluminum carburetor faster than water in your fuel. Particularly hard on pilot systems. Yes, I speak from personal experience.

I put an oil pressure gauge on mine just for the peace of mind. Pressure is higher (60 - 70 psi ) on start up and drops to ( 15-20 psi) after warm-up. I have been told this is normal.

I use hollow ground gunsmith screwdrivers. You are right to be wary, if you screw it up, any if the carb jets can be tough to get out, you only get one chance. Good support under the carb, make sure the blade is engaged, firm downward pressure and hopefully you get the snap of a jet unscrewing...

I have pulled apart several sets of carbs on many different bikes. All seem to have stuck bolts. I use a set of vice grip plyers turn sideways to the axis of the bolt. Get a good grip and they will snap loose and then be easy to remove. I always replace the bolts with new stainless allen head...

Hello all, I have a 88 v-max I bought new off the showroom floor in July of 1989. Its been sitting a few years but has been on the road this summer. A few upgrades but basically a stock survivor with 15,000 miles on it.

I would recommend a Coil Over Plug or COPs system and eliminate the plug wire altogether. The coil is at the plug and only the low voltage wires go to the cylinder. Helped my v-max. About $150 on eBay.
