Could I run 300mm rotors without dying a terrible death the first time I pull out of the driveway?

I only ask because I'm trying to find the least expensive solution to this front wheel swap, and 300mm rotors are much easier to find with 80mm bolt spacing than 298s.

You could always have them turned-down, but that may cost you the difference in price. Slip a wire gauge into the caliper body to see what you have to work with. I'd imagine the fit is tight on the stock caliper/rotor setup.
 
As long as you get the right custom adapters to position the brake calipers appropriately there shouldn't be any problem.
Only thing is, has anyone done this kind of adapter yet?

A lot of guys are using them without issue on 93+ front ends.

I use the EXACT same rotors on my 07...the only clearance issues that I had was between the bolts that HOLD the rotors to the wheel and the bottom of the forks. The stock rotors have a counter sunk hole so the bolts go in deeper. On these rotors I had .008 clearance between one rotor and the lower fork, and .005 on the other. I asked Sean if that was enough, and he said yes, as long as you don't have other issues like bad wheel bearings...etc.
 
It's for an fzr wheel. I think I'm gonna stay with the cheap way for now and do the busa/320 mod later. Gotta get my wheel back from the shop and centered before I fix anything. I'll be shimming the rotors instead of the calipers so I don't have physics issues when I change equipment.

I am using twin-pair opposed-piston Sumitomo 4-pot calipers from a '87-88 FZR1000 on my '93+ front end w/the 298 mm stock VMax '93+ front rotors w/no adapters & no issues. HH pads give me 2 finger braking. I have some 6-pot later-model FZR1000 brake calipers I haven't bothered to fit because I am satisfied w/the 4-pots.

Are the fzr 6-pots the direct bolt-on to stock forks/rotor diameter?

Yes....the fzr 6 pots (which are also on the yzf-750...95 and 96 I think) are a direct bolt on for 93 and up.

Here are some pics. The first pics are with the stock rotors...and the last one is with the wavy rotors.

I like the 6 pot calipers with the stock master cylinder, because they don't engage right away (so you do have more lever travel)...so you have more feeling, and more sensitivity when braking.

Both the 4 and 6-pot FZR1000 calipers are the same 100 o.c. spacing of the '93+ VMax sliders. A bolt-on change, and well-worth-it. The early R1 calipers are the same measurement, the "blue-plug" ones

When chinese say 300 they mean 298... Its the same shit... Just make sure the fitment models they have listed. All the blue, gold or silver dots that are not radial are 100mm bolt spacing...
 
i thought so too fred, there is no 300mm with our bolt pattern afaik...
 
No yet. My supplier declares them as "samples". But, it's hit and miss with customs. Either way for the price they have it still won't be a huge cost.
 
What is the difference between 93-later and 92 - earlier forks? What can I do to the 85?
 
You can get plates to bolt on busa calipers and 93+ rotors.... That's what I did on the 86 project bike. Or you can get a kit from Sean to go to a single 320mm rotor and 6-pot (busa) caliper. That's apparently more brakes than we can use. Also, I gotta say go with racetech springs and gold emulators.

Oh, and the difference is the old ones are skinnier (40 or 41mm) and the newer ones are 43s.
