An odd IT moment today.

So our level 2 support team reaches out to me to help with a user who isn't happy with their service. The user is a scientist from Germany who is angry the emails he's sending to his work email from his home email are getting quarantined and not reaching his Inbox.

I call him up. Try to get him to show me the emails(the support team had released them from quarantine and into his Inbox). Before he does he spend 15 mins complaining about how our quarantine works. I think he wanted to give me an earful because our level 2 support are enginers over in Chennai, India and I think between their accent and his thick German accent a lot of venting was lost in translation. So I let him vent to me how our quarantine systems sucks. I don't say it to him, but I completely agree, it does suck(Office 365). He explains to me that he will often send quick emails from home to work as reminders of different things. He explains he will put what he wants to remind himself of in the subject and then just put a few characters in body of the message to avoid the pop up of "There's nothing in the body of the message, are you sure you want to send?"

He knows as long as I'm waiting to see the emails he has an audience. When he FINALLY shows me the emails, I see the problem immediately. He was putting domain names in the subject line and the text he was using in the body was XXX. Now to me, that's not really the odd part. Funny, but not odd.

I explained to him that putting domain names in a subject line and XXX in the body is gonna get quarantined due to the XXX being associated with porn. And this was the odd part. He had no idea XXX was associated to porn. At first I was thinking to myself "Look man, it's cool. We've all been there. You don't have to feign innocence here." But as we kept talking, I think he was legitimately unaware of the association. So then I went from "Haha, ok man, I get it, you need to pretend you dont know about porn" to "Well shit, now he thinks I'm some porn expert" but then slowly deflected my guilt to the attitude "What the hell? How do you NOT know about porn!? Turn in your man card!"

Anyway, it made me chuckle. I've been in IT so long, it's been awhile since an end user surprised me with something new.
