Tried, real hard, for 3 fricken years to keep my 06 in stock condition. I loved the ?stock? look of the V-Max, that?s why I bought it! Most of my previous bikes remained stock; like the classic ?84 VT-500 Honda and a ?83 Suzuki GSXR 1000 that I had prior to the V-Max. So why not keep the V-Max stock too. Oh ? that was my plan and I told many fellow riders that, right Chuck (aka 2Fear).
Oh, I still did the recommended mods to make the V-Max better in handling & performance right from the get-go, and even snuck in an internal mod like adding Ricor valves to the forks. OK, maybe I crossed the ?keeping it stock? line by doing this, but from the outside, it was still all stock. :confused2:
At my first VMOA meet last summer in Paw Paw, Mi (what a kick-ass time I must say) got to see all a whole variety of modified V-Maxes for the first time. There were V-Maxes with NoX / blowers / chrome / all sorts of pipes & bling ? you name it, it was there. But I kept the faith? bike remained a stock?er; still looked like it did the day it rolled out of the dealer showroom. :biglaugh:
Then after an awesome 400+ mile end of summer Michigan road trip w/ 2Fear, Wildman, & Beekeeper, I came to the realization that my V-Max was not loud enough. I finally realized, like many of you already have, that the V-Max has to sound the way it looks? bad azzz ? and the stock mufflers just don?t cut it.
Then something happened. The only way I can explain it is like this. If you have seen the movie ?Animal House?, you?ll remember the scene where Pinto was in the bedroom looking down on his passed-out date laying on the bed, when an angel and devil of himself appears on his shoulders giving him conflicting suggestions.
Well, my angel was telling me to keep the stock mufflers and just punched holes in it to make it louder. That way you can keep the V-Max looking stock and make it sound a little meaner too. My devil :angry flame: on the other hand, told me? fuck it, replace the damn stock mufflers with some real sounding pipes. I ordered my Mark?s 4-2 SS 14? muffler exhaust system a couple weeks later. Love em ! :thumbs up:
Now that my V-Max is no longer ?officially? stock, I?m OK with this. But for you V-Max owners out there that have kept the Mod Monkey from your bikes and stayed true to the ?stocker? tradition, I applaud you for keeping the faith. :clapping:
But now that I?ve crossed over to the dark side, I got to tell ya, I kinda like it; feels a little naughty!! :banana: Next mod planned? replacing the stock seat with something more comfortable; got a new Maxgasser seat ordered from Rick. Will post pics :pics: of this in the next couple months.
Now I?m ready for some serious riding this season. :hippy biker:

You put a good fight Jeff, but sooner or later the monkey delves into the mind of even the staunchest "keep it stock" advocate! I also had no aspirations of a total makeover, just a "couple" of things to make it stop better. Then it was, fix the seat. A fix to diving front end and by then I had the idea that it wouldn't stop. But it has to stop some time, right?
That's right, it does stop, RIGHT??? Jim, George, Rollie, Prez,...Bueller???:rofl_200:

no

I took SkullDuggery over to a friends house. First thing outta his mouth was; "That's a Hell of a Parts Bike". It was my original idea of where it was gonna go,,, Big Oops. My other idea was to put it all back to stock. Didn't happen.

I had him take a ride, I could hear him for most of it, even when he was about a mile away. He had a blast and told me it's the fastest bike he's ever been on. That's the first chance I have had to hear the 4-1 Kerker with my homemade baffle in it. Not bad but not as good as the Mark's..

These VMax's are as mod friendly as Harley's. VMax can become $Max if your not careful though....:rofl_200:

KosRider, welcome to the wide world of mods and the Mod Monkey!!! You have done well to stay true to the stocker for any length of time, be proud!! Now that you have let that furry bastard into your garage it is too late you are screwed.

Brian, NO IT NEVER STOPS!!!! One look at Toxic and a person would wonder WTF else is left to mod, well I found some stuff, good stuff, lighter, stronger stuff, and the beat goes on!!! I wanna know who gave the Monkey my address so I can get even:bang head:

i'm in the same boat man, i even did the modded exhaust staying with the stock theme with the exception of the corbin i bought after riding the bike for over an hour on that factory ball buster they call a seat. its been 5 years for me and i've been to several rallies with tons of modded maxes and up until i joined his forum i was good with my stock max. but now the monkey sunk his teeth into me and now i cant stop doing stuff taking it further and further away from stock. be careful or the monkey will break your bank.

Congratz on your new exhaust upgrade Jeff! Now you won't be our silent riding partner :biglaugh: Looking forward to riding this season so we can make some noise.:punk:

Jeff,thats part of the beauty of the MAXGASSER,you dont have to sacrifice your stock seat

I too love the look of a stock gen1, I would like to upgrade in the power dept but my bottleneck will be the exhaust, not sure what to do there yet other than drilling out the ends "which I have done" for a better sound, looking foreward to putting down some miles with the gang this year!....................Tom.

Congrats on the Marks! I love the way mine sounds! I've always thought a stock V Max looked awesome and is one of the reasons I bought one. I'm a new owner and from looking at countless pics of other V Maxes and reading about all the mods it boils down to personal taste and wallet size for these bikes. For right now I'm happy with the exhaust,suspension ,and brake mods plus a few chrome goodies,seat and an after market tail light. I really keep telling myself I want it to be clean and tasteful with out going over the top and being too gawdy and spoiling that classic V Max look. That line can get fuzzy at times. lol! Mike

Indeed!:biglaugh:

i joined this forum simply just so i could learn basic maintenance and troubleshooting techniques--for the most part my monkey was well behaved under lock and key. curse the day i clicked the "submit" button, which loosed all yall's furry little bastards into my garage. they broke my monkey outta its cage and corrupted it with unholy thoughts and an unwholesome disposition; and now, what used to be housebroken ball of fluff, pisses on the sofa, spewing out of its potty mouth a list of demands that if fulfilled will keep me from being able to feed my daughter. :rofl_200:

Famous last words ! :rofl_200::rofl_200::rofl_200:

I can proudly say the mod monkey related to this forum, nor any other, has never been able to infest my garage. My 85 is still stock, give or take the big battery mod, after owning it over 25 years. (It may be because deep down I may be a cheap skate though)

I applaude you jfeagins for keeping the stocker faith :clapping:

Ninjaneer - +++ well said !! :rofl_200:

VMike - I hear ya ! I'm in your world now !! :biglaugh:

Brian - the girl in the lobster suit ... that's just not right !!! The 3 beauties before that .... SWEET !!! :clapping:

Good for you jf . Just be careful when you throw down a gauntlet at the monkey. He loves a challenge.

You're stronger than I am... It took me 150 miles before I replaced bars, brake pads, lines and a couple of other small things... That winter, I tore it DOWN and spent some stupid (I was single) money on it.

Now it's DONE and I'm married with a child. Hence the "done" part... lol

Chris

It doesnt' have to stop just cause you got married Chris. You just need to get creative in how you hide your money. Paypal is your friend. Its a great place to hide money. Or, if you are like me and prefer to use cash and buy money orders hide it in your sock or underwear drawer. They never go in there. Or, if you have a nightstand next to the bed that you fill with porn, lube, and vibrators put in there. They never go in that drawer either once you get married :rofl_200:
