Question for those looking for backrests for gen 2's. What would a good price be for new billet backrest assemblies (billet sides with the same style bent steel upper and new pad). I am considering manufacturing them.

IMO

IMO.. I would like to see them from $250-$300 depending on finish. Are you going to offer them anodized, or powdercoated? I did search and you can find a few places that still have the oem backrest in stocks and available and I have found them as low as $425 and aftermarket range anywhere $180-$300
Are you machining these yourself?

These will be machined by one of our suppliers that makes our parts. I am going to speculate in the $400-$450 range depending on the desired finish. Plain billet may be cheaper.

Brushed, anodized possibly a few chrome would sell. I've always loved the contrast of chrome off of matte paint especially black. And with powdercoating the finish possibilities are endless, gloss, matte, patterned ect...
Being machined out of billet would make them alot stronger that the factory cast aluminum. If you wanted it even stronger I would recommend using 7075 aluminum over 6061. And even then it's all relying on the 4 bolt docking points thru the fender struts/plates.
I anxious and very interested to see your first completed backrest.
How many do you intend on making for your first run?

I have a good friend that has a small CNC shop. Prior to the CNC shop he was a partner in a place that did cast AL using plaster molds. The parts came out beautiful and only needed minor CNC work if any. I think the backrest parts are small enough to be reasonable to make this way. To get a bright finish will require some work but there are places that do that for a living. Painted is a slam dunk. The finish from the mold is pretty much paint ready.

I can pass along the contacts if there is an interest.

I may make just one for the prototype verification and then regular orders after that done in small batches.

Do you have a pic?

Sean, if you go ahead with this project I would also be interested.
I was thinking of the factory set up but decided on adding soft bags with a tail bag.
I removed the pillion seat to have it sit lower.
The factory backrest and luggage rack is a much cleaner look and better for short hauls.
Some variation of that would be kool !

I will be hauling the current rack to be scanned and 3D modeling made up later this week. Hopefully have something in the catia environment within a few weeks after that.

I have the OEM back rest and am installing the luggage rack as well. What do you expect the weight limit to be for yours?

Not sure? Wasn't going to alter the overall fit and design much so the same racks should fit?
