my grandpa gave me his 1998 Yamaha V Max. It need a lot of work. But one of the most important things I need to replace is the battery. Can someone recommend me a good battery?

Thank you in advance

Hey Christian, congrats on the Vmax and on having a really cool Grandpa!

I'm from NJ as well......raised in Fair Lawn and currently own a business in Saddle Brook.

As far as a battery other than a multitude of places online that will have one I would try Cycle Gear or Walmart. You may be able to get one right of the shelf at either place.

Best of luck with the bike.

Mark

Thank you Mark!
I am very close to fair lawn and saddle Brooke. He really is the best. I don’t the specifications for the battery. Would you happen to know them?

I haven't owned a Gen 1 Vmax for quite a while so I don't know the battery specs off the top of my head. There are plenty owners here that can make recommendations for you though.......different types and manufacturers.

If you don't already have it, here is a link to the owners manual for the bike. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dcXSAI6LbX_E_mJf97b9Go5U3CCqWuvh

Lot's of good information in there. I also have the service manual in PDF format but it's on my PC at work. I'll post it for you tomorrow (if I remember) LOL.

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on getting a great family heirloom passed down to you. I hope you get lots of miles and smiles out of it.
The model names brands call their batteries might vary a little by manufacturer but the basic model/ size you are going to look for for a Gen 1 VMax is a 16ALA2
One manufacturer might call it a YA 16ALA2 another an Rb 16-AL-A2 etc. you get the idea. Different letters before some with dashes some without . But those core letters. https://www.denniskirk.com/batteries/2001-yamaha-vmx1200-v-max.mmy/40.ipp

You might notice the first link search says it is for 2001, not a 1998. That’s because I used my bike to search, but they are the battery for those model years
I hope this info helps !
