I am in a Conundrum lately...

Free people are not equal. Equal people are not free. Think about it.

"A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again."

A conundrum is a postulation that is puzzling or confusing – a question or riddle that defies resolution.

Here are six Conundrums of socialism in the United States of America:

    1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
    2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
    3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
    4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
    5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
    6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.

Think about it! And that, my brothers , pretty much sums up the USA today.

These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:

    1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.
Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering…

    2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. But we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money! What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't.
Think about it.....and Last but not least:

    3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII,but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to illegal aliens.
Am I the only one missing something?

"If you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools." – Plato

We also have a people that are not for the people.

By that, I mean that the majority that elects our representatives are more concerned with their special interests rather than what is good and right for the country.

There is no conundrum. The status of America is because of Americans. It's the way our founding fathers designed this republic. The problem is their design depended on a citizenry that respected knowledge and expertise. America no longer does either. We celebrate stupidity and take pride in willful ignorance. There is no better example than our present time. And when the results of this willful ignorance begins to bear fruit we just point out fingers at "other" Americans instead of taking a good hard look in the mirror.

    Here's a present day conundrum:

-- If Congress can't do their job, the government shuts down and millions of federal employees don't get paid and creates financial stress for those families. But there ARE some federal employees that DO get paid during a government shutdown -- Congressional Senators and Representatives -- the ones responsible for it in the first place.

-- Fun facts: roughly just 1% of Americans are "millionaires" and yet more than half of Congress, the representatives of Americans, are in that 1%. So the federal employees still getting paid during a government shutdown are the ones that are the richest. The OP talks about the poor getting poorer under subsidies. This is a case of the rich getting richer on the backs of the taxpayer.

Another fun fact. It's happened before, and the sky didn't fall.

You're right about that - I can't deny it. Hell, I think we should apply that approach to everything.

"Police seized my car through civil forfeiture but never charged me with a crime."

-- Fun fact: It's happened before, and the sky didn't fall.

"A company just laid off 1,000 American workers and sent the jobs overseas."

-- Fun fact: It's happened before, and the sky didn't fall.

"An illegal immigrant just committed a crime."

-- Fun fact: It's happened before, and the sky didn't fall.

    Problems solved.

I don't think he was suggesting it as a problem solver. More like we've been through it and survived.

And I never made a claim that a government shutdown was the end of the world. I was pointing out that the ones responsible for keeping it going have made sure their lives aren't impacted by their inability to do their job while millions of Americans will be impacted. Maybe the sky isn't falling for you or me. But I suspect there are quite a few Federal employees who are living from paycheck to paycheck(something the majority of middle class America is doing) who might be under some stress right about now. I don't meet many people who love to work for free. Clearly Congress doesn't.

We don't have a representative government. Congress' bad decisions should effect them just as it effects Americans, but they have so many provisions in place to isolate themselves from their inability to govern. And that is the fault of the people. We vote against our own self interests and we don't hold our representatives accountable. Which was a point made by the OP as well -- only it's not just people on welfare voting against their own self interests and voting for unqualified candidates.

When these politicians get on TV news this weekend for interviews, we know all they're going to do is play the blame game. They'll talk about the "other" party being at fault for it. What they should be asked is "Why do you think you should continue get paid while millions of Federal employees dont?"

During the 2013 shutdown they passed a bill that made sure military were still paid during the shutdown. A similar bill was put forth last night as well and was struck down. Legislation was also propose last night that Congress DOESN'T get paid during the shutdown. It was struck down as well. It shouldn't matter where you sit on the political spectrum -- all Americans should be pissed about that.
