Yes, it can be done but the offset is so far to the right the handling is extremely compromised. I want to say it's almost an inch to the right.

Haven't heard about it. I am not sure about a custom axle. That would be dependent on what size the bearings are. Larger bearings in the wheel (as long as they aren't larger then the opening on the clamp) would be doable with a stepped axle. Smaller bearings in the wheel would require a sleeve on the end where it comes into the diff.

Has anyone tried to fit an FJR 1300 rear wheel to a 1st gen vmax?

Here is a vmax for sale that is running one.

Off topic, but assuming it runs well, that bike is a bargain. Wow.

Any Idea on the width Mike? The front tire a Divi or Thundercat?

Never heard of anyone mounting a Divvy front.
Thundercat front is popular.
I've seen some threads on using a XJ600 front also

My understanding is that the Divvy rear wheel is 17 x 4.5". ****EDIT*** Seems like the more I read I hear it is actually 17x4"

Here are a bunch of posts to read thru

Not sure what years Divvy (XJ900/Diversion) rear will swap. I think its '96 up. You'll have to read thru the posts to be sure.

Here is an ad on ebayuk for a wheel.

If it's a 4.5" wide wheel then a 170/60 would be the ideal size. Any wider will distort the radial.

You need a custom axle and spacers. Check the threads on vmaxchat. There are drawings to make your own or you can buy them from a member

I bet someone could make some money if the picked up some wheels and had a batch job of spacers and axles made.
