Thanks for all your help maxers! still fighting this repair/ Shouldn't this just screw in easy without flywheel or starter clutch attached?

Assuming both male and female threads are not damaged or there is debris in the hole then yes.
It would help if you described what the problem is.
 
If thats the case, you may need to heli-coil or threadsert the crank. Either one of these involves drilling out the stripped threads, installing the threadsert/helicoil and moving on with life.

Doing this repair, you will need to make 110% sure you keep the metal from entering the engine.
