Well, it's easier with the tank upside-down out of the bike. There are stickies on removing the gas tank, which can come-out the side.

(70) How to remove the gas tank | Yamaha Star V-Max VMAX Motorcycle Discussion Forum (vmaxforum.net) Thank Buster for this one.

I have a UFO 4/1, and I wouldn't need to remove the gas tank. Plenty of room under there. Replacing the phillips screws with allen screws would make it easier servicing the fuel sensor in the future.

Thank You. I'll do that when the tank is removed for cleaning soon.

Pictures on that thread no longer available.
You should be able to follow the narrative to accomplish the task. As I recall, you remove the left footpeg hanger, the left shock absorber, the bolt-on frame member, the rubber biscuit vibration insulators/bolts for the tank, under the seat; disconnect the wire for the fuel level sender switch, a small screw at the bottom-rear/center of the gas tank, the clip-in shroud for the fender, and of-course the hose, and it should exit the left side with a bit of angling to extract it.

Thank you. Would pulling the rear wheel help also?

Hey patate657
Saturday I replaced the tank in my buddy's prestine 85 with a N.O.S.
tank from Partzilla.
The bike had been sitting since 09, it got new rubber, complete carb
rebuild along with new carb to manifold boots, a spin-on oil filter adapter, oil change, coolant flush and it also needed a Vboost control module, he got an after-market programmable unit.
I did remove the back wheel, I do believe it was necessary for wiggle room.
I have removed the fuel level sensor from the tank in the bike right out of the bottom with no problem at all.
There is a 12mm drain bolt next to the sensor, I drained the tank by loosening the 10mm sensor bolts a little then removed it.
