Gen 1 water pump rebuild

I know there’s threads on water pump rebuild but I can’t find anything on the direction of the oil seal. Does the numbers go towards the bearing or the mechanical seal? Gen 1 thanks for any help I guess I should have stayed working on it so I’d remember.

The open end of the oil seal should face up, out of the bore.

But man, oh man, how many times have I fallen into that trap? Get started on a project and shelve it for a while…
