Those Certs were issued with a maturity date of 1945. The march was to force the US to pay them years early because the depression was SO bad. History searches show the Certificates were finally paid years early when Congress overrode then President FDR's veto of it.

My eighth grade civics class hit on this topic briefly, at best.
 
Anyone else catch the political cartoon at the 5:43 mark? Pretty remarkable how relevant that cartoon is today.
