Custom DIY face-plates are pretty simple to make. The only pain in the butt is deciding what goes where, as we all have different ideas of what we would like.

Here is a .rar file, with a couple of different files, of a blank face-plate with a reference for a 2.25" and a 1.75" hole. It is in 1 to 1 scale in AutoCAD's .dwg and a .dxf format. http://www.mediafire.com/?hqq523lez9c3643 You can download a viewer for both formats here: http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/

Then it's print (at 1-1 scale), lay out your design then just, trace and cut. Hope this helps. I did my last instrument cluster for under $45.

That last pic is what yamaha should have made the dash look like from the factory! Nice work KJ!
 
KJ is DA MAN. I am curious as to what it looks like behind the faceplate. How you routed wires and affix the gauges.
 
Well done , very nice . I like that last one too. Somebody could make a few bucks duplicating that one , with different gauges / changes for individual tastes.

I might do that later with digital gauges. For now I'm still thinking about the speedo/tacho which can be costly if not chinese :) wondering also how painful is the wiring lol

Thanks KJ, what is the best way to label the newly cut faceplate? If you still want to see the "Oil" "Highbeam" etc...
 
Timing is KJ as I am looking at doing that mod over the winter. You definitely are making my job easier. Thanks for taking them time to post this.

We have an NC code around here somewhere that we used to make a few custom plates. The OEM metal was too thin to chrome and is why we decided to make one out of thicker aluminum.

I've done it two ways. The first way was by using the rub on lettering you can find for model trains and such, or what I did on the second one was make a second plate using trophy plate plastic, to go over the face-plate and just have a trophy shop engrave it for you. I did this way with my second one, but I broke it while trimming it. I'm sure there are many other ways to do it too. Materials I've used was aluminum from an old street sign I had laying around for the current one and the one that I had the digital voltmeter on was made from 1/4" lexan.
