Hello guys, Im relatively new to upgrading motorcycles and I took upon purchasing a 2001 vmax motorcycle, im 21 and found this motorcycle a fun project bike. Ive ridden other bikes before and nothing feels like a v max, i joined this forum looking for advice on how to have fun with my bike so heres my question:

Where should i start to upgrade the performance and handling of my bike? whats a good starting point. I dont have alot of money but i want to start figuring out this motorcycle and make it my baby.

Im not perfect but I am seriously interested in learning. Any suggestions would work. Ive seen things from CPU upgrades to Micro machines v boost controller to exhaust systems. Whats my best option? Thanks guys!:punk:

Hi newbie

If it was me, again starting over I would start of with new exhaust system jet kit stage 1 open air box k/n filter, next front brakes up grades, Then I would work on cleaning the bike up adding chrome or painted parts, Then think about wheels tires and the swing arm notch for a wider rear tire.

Welcome to the forum. New fork springs are a good place to start on the cheap. Then rear shocks. $350-600 and up for both, depending on what rear shocks you pick. All progressives are better than stock. Now's a good time to decide if you want to lower the bike with a shorter rear shocks and loweering kits tot go with the springs up front. HH brake pads in front are a lot better for around $70.
If you have Dunlop Qualifiers for rubber, anything is an upgrade. Two stickier tires can be had for $200-$300. A full exhaust system is usually the first step in the performance direction. Up in the $1k area for that.

Thanks guys, Ive been told numerous times to look at the exhaust, im torn apart between looks and functionality, i want perfomance but im hisitant to going balls deep in a nice exhaust and screw myself over if i want to chip the bike or so on. Any suggestions to an exhaust? Thanks again for putting up with us newbies, i needed to start somewhere and i figured a Vmax forum was the best direction.

Welcome here!
The stock calipers on your 2001 aren't great, but they are not rubbish. Just changing the stock brake lines into stainless steel brake lines would be a relatively cheap improvement.

I picked my vmax up last August, also a 2001 and the first thing in my book was to rebuild and lower the front forks by 1 inch then new progressive shocks out back. You can have all the power in the world but if the bike don't handle, then it's junk IMHO. After the handling then you need good brakes, I upgraded to HH pads up front and it feels a lot better and stops pretty good as well. After that, I then focused on the exhaust and the mod monkey has never left me. I just recently installed a HID kit and LED blinkers, a relay on the horn and sanded and painted everything matte black. Good luck and always check this forum if you have questions, you will find an answer to anything vmax here, welcome.

If it were me I'd get it to handle first - have a look here for some pointers.

Then get it to stop better.

After that you can make it go better.

Only problem is that you will also be exposed to an infinite amount of eye candy which will also be vying for your hard earned.

Decisions, decisions!

The factory did an awsome job with the design and tune of it's Gen 1 engine, it makes great power for 30 year old technology, but it's expensive to make substantial gains in the power levels beyond stock, like was stated before your best options would be a full exhaust system and jet kit, the stage 7 setup is probally the best bang for the buck.......................Tom.

As stated above, Upgrade your Fork Springs First.
Progressive fork springs are under $100 and make a world of difference.
Then use HH Brake Pads and think about Progressive rear Socks.
If you do end up looking at Full Exhausts, I'd look at these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VooDoo-1st-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item19e5aaf974&vxp=mtr

I don't think you'll find a better price on a Full SS Exhaust for ou Bike.
And a Morleys Muscle kit or Stage 7 Kit are your 2 options, if you do get a full exhaust system.

I would say brakes and tires FIRST. The Vmax goes pretty well on its own....but it can use upgrades in the braking dept. You can do the HH pads, or different calipers. SS brake lines if your lines havent been changed out every 5 years, BUT if you get into a panic stop...the SS brake lines wont expand, so will lock up the stock brakes easier...so keep that in mind. I did it twice....and so changed the calipers to the 6 pot FZR/YZF calipers from the mid ninties...and now have all of the brakes that I want.

After that, a fork brace, and then frame braces. These chassis tend to flex a bit in tight corners.

Do any wear/worn items 1st. If you want a totally-different handling dynamic, get a rear 17/18" replacement wheel, and go radials, you can re-use your front wheel. This will cost you about $1K if you but a new modded wheel from Kosman Engineering, and just walk-into a shop and buy some premium radial rubber, or it may be considerably cheaper if you buy a used wheel for the rear & wait for a sale price for radial tires, or order online. 110 width in-front is all you want to do w/the stock wheel.

Benefits? Assuming your steering head bearings aren't 'knackered,' and the fork has oil, and the swingarm pivot is torqued correctly, and your rear shocks aren't worn-out, you will see an end to front-end weave at higher speeds, easier turning and in L-R transitions, a big overall improvement compared to stock bias ply tires. My opinion is there is not another single improvement which you can make which changes the bike so-much for the better.

After that, stainless-steel brake lines in-front & HH pads, your calipers are fine for the type of use you are going to give the bike, but some people like to use the 6 piston (3 opposed-pair) calipers. I have a set and have never bothered mounting them because of the improvement in brake handling I got from the SS lines and HH pads.

Performance stuff is easy for bolt ons like a full exhaust, the new VooDoo looks like a reasonably-priced alternative to what-else is out there. Bolt-ons change the tone, but are generally considered to not improve power, save your $$ for a good full system. The Morley's Muscle carb kit and Dynojet Stage 7 (forget any DJet Stage 1 or 3) are what nearly-all the guys on here have. If you go to a full exhaust, you need to install the jet kit to make the bike make more power, after tuning.

Fork braces, frame braces, beefed-up swingarms, all can help handling they go from easy to hard and from $ to $$$ in that order.

For night riding, I would go to a 7" round halogen headlamp in either 35 watt or 55 watt. EMGO makes a relatively affordable steel side-bolt mount bucket, and you will need some 43 mm 'ears' to mount it to your forks, I suggest double-bolted ones w/rubber insulators for the fork tubes. Riding a bike equipped w/this improvement at night will make you wonder why you put-up w/the stocker's anemic output. If you look at ddmtuning.com, you can get a HID upgrade for not much more $ for that bucket, I suggest a 5000 or 6000 temp bulb (not an actual 'hotness' as you probably know, it refers to the color of the light output).

You are only limited by your bank account. I suggest reading a lot of posts on the mods of your choice by using the 'search' function on the forum, come-up w/a plan and budget, research your sources for sales and etc, and then have at-it. Planning will keep you from doing something like buying new bias-ply tires, and then deciding that you really should buy radials.

Good-luck.

That's the best deal I've seen in a while on a full exhaust.

It sounds just like the UFO 4 into 1 (they are VERY LOUD, but I believe you could add a baffle to the Megaphone if needed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtGxq1ouIKo

I'd guess the power would be about the same with either system.
