So I"m riding along in 5th gear for 3 miles and when I come to a red light I cannot downshift at all. Roll to a stop and shifter wont move. I take the linkage off and try to move with pliers and just a little but didn't really feel anything move. Put the linkage back on and start to take off in 5th gear. I kicked it down to 2nd and make it home using 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th.I have no 1st gear and no neutral. It is in 2nd and I can change through to 5th but there feels like nothing there below 2nd gear-just play.I read through all the drivetrain threads and nothing like it yet. Changed oil 2 weeks ago with no problems.

Possible shift selector issue.
Check the how to section. There is a thread on this.

Common on older vmaxii. The parts were updated in later years

Yes, the shift segment losing a few pins would be my first guess too.

Read the attached guide.

And this is a list of the parts needed:
4NK-18185-00-00 SEGMENT Qty: 1
93604-12037-00 PIN, DOWEL Qty: 5
93604-16092-00 PIN, DOWEL Qty: 1
3JP-15462-00-00 gasket crankcase cover Qty: 1
and maybe a 90151-06013-00 torx bolt to replace the one you're gonna take out (it is prone to stripping)

Thanks Dennis, I found the thread with the part numbers and have been looking for the parts somewhere different from yamaha. They are MILES from me.
