I do totally agree and functionality aside ... the drum brake mechanisms MM posted above are an absolute work of art.
 
I'm no expert* but I would say that's a piss poor implementation, notice that half the width of the brake disc is unswept.

*just to qualify. I cannot recall seeing a disc brake fitted to a car, motorcycle or mountain bike where the pads don't sweep the fill width of the brake disc. And garnering information about disc brakes, you want the unsprung weight as low as possible hence discs are no larger than necessary.

The only exception is shimano ice tech rotors, an aluminium piece sandwiched between two stainless steel braking surface, the aluminium shaped ad a fan to aid cooling.
