Just got the bike back together. Went to crank it and it'd lock up with a loud clank a couple of times. Got it going and it ran pretty great. Idled and revved up fine. I let it idle about 10 minutes. After that I took it out for ride. Then it began to back fire while slowing down in gear.
Then the engine died and had to restart it. I didn't do anything to the engine. All I did was put another fuel pump on. Swapped out the complete exhaust. Realigned the carb joints on the air box and made sure of good sealing at the boot. No leaking gas at the carbs. After I got back, I noticed that I had not installed the air filter (Maybe the problem..?). Any ideas I should look into...? Thanks

Yeah, before you get too concerned, put the air cleaner in there and try it again. These things are pretty sensitive to changes on the intake side.
