I noticed my left side damper plastic adjuster was spun off the numbers and I cannot get it back to the 3 position. What's the technique to reposition it to the usual number? TIA

Not sure if it makes a difference, but try setting spring preload to the lowest setting.

Yesterday I had the same problem. It was impossible to move, locked at 4 and trying to get into point 3.
Carefully, pressing down a little, I was able to move it, now it is normal
I hope you made it and I hope it doesn't lock again, it doesn't look like a heavy duty piece.

it was careful but not so much 
... some force to unlock without breaking ...
Fire-medic gives a good solution, it was the first thing I thought, download the shock absorber and try.

The factory service manual warns about turning the damper adjustment collar to beyond the #'s in either direction.
