I put the Shorai Lithium battery in over the weekend. I had not opened the battery box before and discovered that the Gen2 battery is wrapped in a heat resistant shroud with holes for the top posts only.

I had to cut a notch out of the shroud and the plastic battery cover to route the dedicated charging cable that the Shorai takes. Since the connector is on the cable it was an interesting effort to get down to the LHS where the old 12V Aux cable was hanging.

It is super light. I can balance the battery on a couple of fingers . Now I will see if I get the extended lifetime.
 
You wont regret it! I KEEP mine on a tender, a regular old cheap (HF) tender.
Just dont ever completely drain it and you wont have to have the special
charger/maintainer.

The investment in a dedicated Li-ion charger is minimal, and while a traditional lead/acid or AGM battery charger may work, I feel better about using the right tool for the job. How many stories are there about batteries misbehaving and starting fires? Often they're not even charging.

If you read some info from manufacturers about how Li-ion batteries work, you may find that the battery needs a certain partial charge for the battery to accept charging.

BU-304a: Safety Concerns with Li-ion Attempting to charge a Li-ion battery at temperatures of 32 degrees F or below can cause issues with the chemical function of the battery, and can lead to internal failure, which could result in a fire. That sounds like something to read-up on for those of you who leave Li-ion batteries on chargers in freezing weather.

I dont like me being in freezing weather never mind the VMAX.

Thanks for the info on the low temps. I have heated Winter storage and this confirms it a good choice. Regrettably there was two inches of snow on the ground this morning about 15 miles East of me, so I am still waiting for the good weather. Hence the Mod Monkey is making me dance now.
