Like Eric mentioned, a piece of fuel hose works great. It wobbles them in nd makes it impossible to cross thread. And it's good for removal of the plugs too, once broken loose. The socket/wrench combo in the Gen 1 tool kit works very well.
 
I use a 1" extension and a universal with a Spark Plug socket. [3/8 Drive] this combination puts the drive end a about the cylinder.
 
On my 1992/gen1 the only problem I ever had was the clamps on the water hoses (front left & rear right). I have to raise the hose clamps to get the socket drive in, then end up with coolant leaking into the cylinders. I spray lots of water dispersant around, leave the HT leads off and turn the engine over a few times before hooking everything up and running till warm.
