I do not see how that figure can be accurate. That would mean half of us pay nothing. I know a lot of people and not one of them are getting off tax free. How many people do you know that are?

I've actually done a lot of research on this, those numbers are straight off the IRS website. you gotta dig to find them, they are in tabular form excel sheets. And it takes some basic common sense to make heads or tails of them.

Actually the bottom half pay about 3% of the taxes for the last year available, but take home about a 13% share of the money. If you believe in a progressive tax system then that's not terribly bad, it's in the higher incomes where the disproportionality gets really skewered.
Having fed income tax deducted all year and then filing and getting most or all of it back, or in many cases MORE than they paid in (Read up on the EIC) mean you didn't really pay any taxes at all, or very little. The argument that the upper income pay more because they have all the money doesn't hold water, the share of tax paid versus share of total AGI for the country is disproportionate and get's worse as the total income goes higher.
And if I hear one more Pol say "working familes" I'm gonna puke, does a professional couple that busted thier ass through college and holds two good jobs working 55-70 hours a week not qualify as a working family because they make too much? They don't work?? WTF?? I shoulda gone on welfare instead of the 800-1000 hours of O.T I work every year, most of it away from home and out of state (I've bee in 7 different States so far this year) so I can put MY kids thu college so they can do better than me, what the fuck happened to the American dream of busting your ass and getting ahead? We are paying more dollars and an ever increasing percentage only to be told by the ones that pay virtually nothing that we are not doing our part and should pay more???? The progressive income tax system has gotten completely out of hand.
And before we bitch about the rich we should realize that 103k puts you in the top 10% of the U.S. It only takes 62k to put you in the top 25% of earners, when they talk about taxing the rich they are talking about a lot of us and we don't even realize it. How many families that have their shit together with both spouses working aren't in one of those ranges?
The top 25% earners share of total tax has climbed 10% in the last 25 years, The feds ARE shifting the tax burden higher up the scale, and the higher the income the higher the shift. The top one percent has gone from paying 25% of the total to 39% of the total. How far can they go before Atlas shrugs, says "fuck it all" and takes his football (And the jobs he creates) and goes home......How will the economy do then Obama you stupid socialist fuck? I know he didn't start this but he sure has taken a new lead in trying to push it to an even more extreme degree than ever before by any Pol in history

Many people under the 25K income pay very little if at all, in the lower single digits at most, especially if they have kids in which case many times they get a bigger refund than they put into the system, welfare and income redistribution pure and simple.
I say if you're going to take away the tax breaks from business that are there to help business and the country thrive, then the tax breaks given to low income people need to go away as well...Every one should pay the same RATE regardless of income......
But I hold absolutely no hope for that ever happening, the populist point of view is too easy to present, easy to understand and digest (even tho it's wrong), and is an easy sell at election time, and after all, how many people do you know willing to turn down a free thing when some one they don't know or care about has to pay for it???..Universal health care subsidized on someone elses dime is just one example, you want health care then don't fuck around in school. sStudy hard, work hard and a decent job will FIND you, the economy would thrive and there would be even more jobs to go around....Democrats and Republicans alike are both guilty since it's "all about the vote".
