So the engine is American 1987-1996. Normally, the frame and engine do match indeed.

They USED to match in the earlier years but we've seen multiple occasions with one owner bikes were it did not. Based on the chart I'm looking at yours ins a 2000. And I am going to guess a very early one. See what your month/date is on the steering neck. I would bet it's 07/99-09/99

Thanks for the info my frame serial is 2WE078244 I have had a look at the photo you have posted but can’t understand what year that would be, do you think the frame is 07/99 - 09/99 as well? Sorry I’m a bit confused with the chart / list you posted. Thanks very much for the help regards Glenn.

Thanks for the info one2dmax has posted that it could be a 07/99 - 09/99 model which would be closer to the registration number I have. It’s very hard to establish the actual date do you think it can’t be a 1999? as the dates you gave is up to 1996 thanks Glenn

Interesting thread guys. I'll be looking at mine as it's allegedly a Canadian import.

Look at the sticker on the neck where the vin number is. There will be a manufacturer date which is month and year.

There’s no sticker on the neck / headstock just the punched frame number, makes me wonder why, if it was removed because it was stolen why leave the punched number. Thanks for taking time to answer and You recon the engine is a 1999 that’s good enough for me so I know what parts I’m ordering for it just one more thing when ordering spares etc the websites ask for the sub model is that the four digit one 3JPX or is it the vmx12L many thanks

My frame & engine numbers do not match either. It's 1998 & both have the Canadian 2LT (N) as part of their numbers. Date of 1st registration is 1998 & date of 1st reg'n in UK is the same, declared new by the independent importer so unless it came to the UK from Canada (or ?) with a spare engine that's its original one.
There is no sticker either just etched onto the stem tube.

We have seen multiple instances where the numbers do not match from the original owners. Not sure why the factory got off at some point but I would not assume that the engine has been replaced just because they do not match. This happened more in the later 90's through the end of production. They did match more often in the earlier bikes.
