I have one season of riding on my Vmax since acquiring it last Summer. I think I'd like to protect myself a little from the wind during cooler temperatures so I'm looking at windshields. I absolutely don't want a big unattractive shield, but the little "fly" screens don't seem like they could offer much protection from the wind. Anyone care to offer a recommendation for a medium sized shield that looks good but offers more protection than a tiny shield? Pics would be appreciated.

this is a replacement windshield that goes on the oem bracket not much taller(about 8" I think) but helps keep the wind out of my face and body. i got it from Boxenstopp in Daytona.

Outside of the fly screen, looks go out the window. I have a Memphis shades that I can just see over
while riding. It's great for long rides in cool weather. I can put the tall one on without removing the fly screen. It comes off quick.

Try the 'search' function for windshield, windscreen, flyscreen & etc. There are lots of pics & links, I know because I contributed. You can get a taller flyscreen from Gustaffson Plastics in FL (sp?) It's in the thread.

I have a couple of stock flyscreens & a wider, higher bar-mount. I also have a vintage Shoei 'bat-wing screen/fairing I have wanted to try but have never mounted. A vintage look to be sure! V. popular in the 1970's/'80's.

Byron's taller screen looks like the one from Gustaffson. it is down the road from Boxenstopp, in St Augustine FL.

I have tried a few over the years and for me, the one I currently have works the best. It's a Memphis Shade Hellcat. You do have to either relocate the signal lights or cut the bottom of the shield on each side, which is easy enough.

I've had a few from national cycle. Good quality and fit. Can't remember which model I used.

Never had any windshield ever that didn't get weird aerodynamically at speed causing some increased high speed wobble. Tilt it back far enough to stop that and then at speed the low pressure are behind the shield would pull me into the handlebars and raise wrist fatigue.

Maybe I just never found the right one for the bike.

The ones that are slightly below eye level are the only way to go if you ride in rain much at all I think.

I'm thinking this Memphis Shades Shooter model might be a good compromise between protection and looks. I do have after market turn signals which sit closer to the headlight than stock, so I'm not sure how that would work out.

The OEM Mini shield works well. Not to be confused with the small flyscreen.

Hey why don't you look at the photos of the members bikes here then message them on the one you like the looks of . I liked the hell cat one had one on my vulcan 800.:)

Did a lot of looking at pictures. Most guys don't seem to like a shield on their Vmax, and I understand completely. The only one outside of a flyscreen that I think I could live with is a Shooter from Memphis Shades. They're pretty expensive! But what isn't. So, I think it's narrowed down... I have a few weeks before Spring.

I have a National Fly and I really like the look. Only thing is that since I put on stubby signals it changes the angle on how the brackets sit on the Fork Tubes. Which changes the angle of the Screen and it doesn't fit as tight against the headlight housing. Looks good though..

IMHO the best 'medium' ones are the Slipstreamer Spitfire (see pic on my ol' black '86, but bear in mind I had it mounted very high to keep air flow underneath) and the OEM medium shield, it can still be found here and there.. pic also attached.

Agreed on the spitfire, you can snag them for $70 shipped pretty regularly on e-bay. They do sit a little annoyingly high on the headlight as pictured, but I haven't had any issues with general air flow.

You can get it lower on the headlight but it forces the angle to be pretty much straight up and down. Which hoses the aerodynamics and creates bad buffeting and mpg issues.

I've opted for having the angle correct/in line with the forks and dealing with the shield over the headlight. It's quick release so it only looks like butt in the early spring/late fall.

I built mounts for a Memphis Shades Bullitt faring and have had it on for over a year. Of course I think it's the best looking of all the fairings out there. It took lots of mods to make it work ( fork mounting brackets, struts, extended turn signals posts).
It really is for looks----- there is some buffiting and I wouldn't use it for a long trip. But I wouldnt use the Max for a long trip. M/S now makes an add on deflector that they say will stop all the buffiting but it's butt ugly. Thank goodness I have a Honda Valkarie for longer trips.

So the bullitt fairing is just another option.

I have the National Cycle shield and it's HUGH but it's pretty dang comfy on a long trip. It comes off in about 30 seconds.

Around town = shield OFF
Out of town trips = shield ON
