I love my vmax and own a 82 Harley shovelhead FXR it's a great bike, Most problems I have seen are due to owner ability to fix things correctly or no repairs at all , sound familiar? I enjoy the old iron lots of character.
I priced the 2 in baffle yes its pricy so I built one from an old cherry bomb muffler and some stainless perforated tubing from LA Choppers. I sawed off the ends of the muffler trimed them to fit in the can. Then cut the tubing to length tack welded it to the ends wrapped it with packing sounds...
I just looked in the service manual on page 3-66 that is for sure the oil pump drive gear. It may have locked because for any number of reasons most likely a assembly mistake a very expensive mistake. I would tear it down and check everything. You may be able to salvage the heads and cams and...
Congrats on the bike, those FCRs are great carbs. I run the PCW 39mm with a 30mm bell and UNI filters lightly oiled. The carbs need clean fuel and a good fuel filter. I run threw the gears a little longer than with the stock carbs, they will bog, just treat it like a dirt bike! You will need to...
I bought a 95 Yamaha wr250 and rebuilt the top and bottom end for 800.00. It needed the crank pin, rod and piston along with the lower end bearings and seals replaced. The bike is a screamer for sure. I would look into what a complete engine rebuild will cost on the bike you are looking at. I...
I removed the pipes and had two rings made up and welded around the two places where the rear pipes go in. This made for better support and no more cracking of the thin metal. I also use the high temp sealant it helps quite a bit.
Hope this helps.
I installed the double d per PCW in my max back in the early 90s. It has been good ever sense, even running synthetic oil. With the stock clutch and syn it fried.
Ok your pump sounds like it is good. I would at the very least put new plugs in it. I have a 85 and it does the backfire deal and won,t start when the plugs go to crap. Then like was said check for voltage at the tcu.
Is the fuel pump running constantly or not stopping? If so you may have a rubber valve out of place in the pump making it not build pressure. If that is the case there is thread about reparing it. Just search on fuel pump.
