Tach only works when I tap it

Hi, As topic title. The wires are good and clean, Tach is dead until I gently tap it. Then it`s just fine. When the bike sits for more than a few minutes, I need to tap it again for it to work. Is there any way to fix this? Thank you.

Bad sounding engine. Big end gone?

Hi, A Vmax rider from the Netherlands reached out to me with this video: I`m afraid it`s a big-end failure or something similar. But before I tell him to get a new engine I`d like for you guys to also have a look / listen and tell me what you think. Thank you. Edit: I`m sorry this should...

    Starting issue

Hi, Since some time, my Vmax has trouble starting. Before anyone asks, it`s not the EFI part that doesn't work, it`s the ignition not firing as the RPM is too low for it to sync. What I`ve done so far: - Upgraded to a 4-brush starter motor. - New Motobatt battery (as replacement for my Odyssey...

Need help identifying the triple trees and forks on this Vmax

Hi! I`m trying to help out a German Vmax rider who wants to buy the bike below which is located in the Netherlands. For the TÜV (simimar to the DMV), everything needs to be documented. So before he can import the bike to Germany, the parts need to be identified. Who can help with this? Thank you!

    EFI conversion on a Gen-1

Hi, After reading this (Electronic fuel injection- CV carbs to TBI) topic, I became interested in modifying my Gen-1 into a fuel injected bike. To do it properly, I wanted to use a Wideband Lambda sensor, a MAP and TPS sensor and some other bits and pieces. The reasoning behind doing the...

    YZF or Thunderace front wheel

Hi, I`m looking for a direct swapover rim for my original`93 front end. I am already running R1 rotors and calipers so anything that could take those without any modification would be great. From what I read, Thunderace would work but I also heard R1`s would work. The latter however doesn't...

Hi, One of our club members has the dreaded issue with 2nd gear. Basically it pops into neutral even with little to no throttle being applied. Now he wants to continue to drive this riding season and then tear the engine apart during the winter. Do you guys think he can safely continue to drive...

    Ignition cutoff relay function

Hi, My bike never had the cutoff relay as shown in this picture: As by bike currently keeps running when it`s in gear with the side stand out, I want to reenable this circuit so the bike will cut out when the sidestand is extended and the bike is in gear. I`ve done some measurements to...

What is the use of these shims?

Hi, When searching for some info I found this picture on Sean`s facebook site: Can someone explain what these shims do? During assembly, the bearing is placed a bit to the right and when the crankcases are joined, the cover plates are attached moving the bearing to the left (ensuring it sits...

    Ticking noise from front cam

Hi, Since a while, I hear a steady ticking from the upper part of my engine. When the engine is cold, it runs fine but when it warms up, you can hear a ticking noise. Using my stethoscope, I checked all around the engine and the noise is definitely the loudest around the front right cylinder...

    Straightening subframe

Hi, My subframe is a 'bit' out of center as can be seen in the attachment. Wheels are completely in line so no problems there. Has anyone got a good idea of how so straighten it? So far, I`ve not been able to get it back to center, the subframe is stronger than I thought. Any ideas are...

ball, fused, pushrod Pushrod and ball fused together

Hi, I was disassembling my clutch and found the pushrod (20) and the ball (23) fused together. Also there was quite some wear on the pushrod 2 (22), see picture attached. To get the ball from the pushrod I had to put it in a vice and even then it was quite some work. Has anybody any idea what...

Drive shaft leaking after replacing seal

Hi, Over the last four years, I have had to replace the drive shaft seal twice and now it`s leaking again. I`m talking about the seal where the shaft exists the engine block, number 18 in the diagram below. Also, I`ve replaced the bearings 10 and 13, so they are fine. I _think_ it only...

Blue smoke om WoT and strange compression readings

Hi, One of my fellow riders told me I am leaving behind blue smoke when I accelerate hard so this winter, I`m planning to fix that. First things that come to mind are the valve seals, my bike had been standing for 10 years when I bought it so they might have dried out but to verify I did a cold...

    Some questions about the pumpkin

Hi, Last weekend, I noticed my real wheel was making creaking noises: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpoa_rN1Db4 It used to do that before, but I fixed that by tightening the loose nut number 16: However, the nut was still tight but the noise has returned, worse then before. When I investigated...

Higher octane means more ignition advance?

Hi, From reading a lot of articles on the internet, it seems the higher octane fuel you run, the farther you can advance your ignition. Normally the lowest octane you can put in the Vmax is 86. Since I live in the Netherlands and we have only 95 and 98 octane (nothing lower), it seems to make...

Using new type CDI on 85 Max

Hi, My `85 max has an issue with the CDI, below 2K RPM, there is no spark on both rear cylinders. Above 2K, no problem. First, I will try and solder the unit again (fixed a timing issue the same way three years ago) but if that does not fix the problem, I would like to install a newer type...
