Hi,
I've read the Forum re. stuck floats & I attempted the following, with gas spilling first out of overflow tubes at carb., then corrected that area, then overflow into breather tubes, while all the time gas was flowing into the exhaust. No I didn't explode.:damn angry:
I did the following corrective measures:
1. banged the float with rubber mallet while engine running.
2. shut down & tried again. Way too easy a fix.
3. removed the slides & polished with emery cloth; sprayed with WD40,
the sprayed card cleaner into carbs.

I did correct the breather tubes overflow, but still gas enters the exhaust from those two carbs. No issues with # 3 & 4 carbs.

I do not feel competent (72 yrs. & ability to do minor repairs on a bike)
to perform the "shotgun" (remove carbs). I've tried that skill level before & did one step wrong or missing & then had to do it all over again.

So, do you then recommend I find a mechanic who can work on a VMAX?

I give up on the easy fixes suggested.

Thank you for the info. that I did use. This site is great for the newbie, as
at the least, one realizes the various skill levels to correct issues.
Now I can at least explain the issue to a mechanic (that I tired the easy steps).

If you can pop them off, Dannymax has been known to do a great cleaning job on them.
I'm not to sure what you mean by getting to your exhaust though. That would be from a hanging valve or some super flooding. If its flooding that bad, fuel might be getting by your rings. Drain off a little bit of oil and give it a sniff to see if you can detect any fuel odor. fuel washed oil is of no use to you and will mess up an engine.

Hi,
Another day & look at the issues.
Gas comes out of the breather tubes for Carb #2 (front); # 1 rear & the other side carbs are OK.
No gas in oil that I see thru the glass port.

Gas does not come out of the exhaust pipe. Seems the gas poring down entered
the pipe (I suppose but not sure).

So it seems the float may still be stuck. I banged away again.
I looked into the carbs & gas "sits" in the #2 carb, when I open the throttle
to look into it. So must be a float issue.

To correct: do I have to disassemble just the # 1 or do I have to take lot's
of parts off to free the float?

Please advise.
Thanks,
Jim

Can you take a flashlight and have a good look inside your fuel tank? Do you see any rust?

To get the fuel bowls open you need to remove all four carbs - they come off as a rack.

Have you tried draining your float bowls by opening each draining screw and collecting the fuel that comes out of the drain hoses into a clear or white container to check for dirt/deposits?

It could be time to do a tear down and rebuild James. Has it been done recently? The needles could be worn beyond their ability to stop fuel from entering the bowls. It's not worth a fire. Yes, Dannymax is the man for carbs in this area. They'll get done right. pm'd you. I don't live too from you.

Update:

I have a full explanation of the re-build services of DannyMax.
I think I will remove them & send them off.
Only one carb. is leaking (not fuel into exhaust) but draining down
from the front left one; really pours out & down. I spent a lot of time
on on the "shotgun" procedure, with no success. I had my laptop there
to view the pics on the pages for the "shotgun", that was helpful.
No rust in fuel tank.
Did not measure float level as this carb. is really in bad condition somehow.
Gas pours out of the breather tubes & drain tube below carb.
Drained that carb. then started, no gas leak until the bowl filled.
I stored it in good running condition. Next winter I'll start up a few times,
to keep them working.

Option, Your float is sticking, atleast it sure sounds that way. Start Your Engine additive may clear it after some effort. It did work on one of mine. Dannymax is "The Man" Otherwise..... Also, use Non Ethanol where possible.....

Good Luck......

James good to see you still have the max!

I sold James this '94 back in '08 when i bought my '03.
