This is the 2nd time I've had this issue. I remove the stator cover insert, oil leaks out and soaks the bottom 1/3 of the gasket. When I go to put it back together, the gasket is too big. The ID is larger than it should be. It squishes right out from behind the cover.

Anyone ever have this happen? Any way to fix it without buying a new one?

Is the orange o-ring on the insert in good condition, or is it there even?

Orange O-ring is there and in good condition.

The black rubber seal that fits between the insert and stator cover is the problem. When you try to line it up on the 3 posts that locate the gasket, it is too big in diameter to fit on all three posts. I can grab the top two and 10 and 2 o'clock. The gasket sits about 1/2" lower than the post at 6 o'clock. If I try to force it onto the pins I actually have to force the gasket.

When the gasket is removed from the stator cover, you can see it is deformed in the area that it was soaked with oil. It will not sit flat on the bench.

That is strange as even if you didn't have the oil deflector washer it should not leak. I may have one of those gaskets around that i can offer you bud...

Thanks for the offer Fred. It will probably take some time to get to the US though. I'm hoping to get this wrapped up by Friday.

Yea, it does happen but shouldn't be quite that bad. The cover if you can get it back on usually will pull it back flat.

WD-40 will make rubber gaskets grow, diaphragms too, haha, first set of CV carbs I ever did I WD-40'ed the diaphragms and like to've never got 'em back in.

Not sure what oil would do that. Are you running any weird additives etc??

Yes it is petroleum based, but soak two identical O-rings, one in "normal" oil and the other in WD-40 and I'll bet a paycheck the one in WD-40 swells noticeably while the one in oil does not....

Why I have no idea......

I ordered a new one. Should be here Thurs. I will try to remember to get a pic of this one. I tried shoving it under the insert but it just squirted right out.

No additives. Just Rotella 15w-40

I had the opposite issue with carb diaphragms. I had a set of carbs sitting in a box for over a year. When I took the diaphragms out, they were so shrunken up, I couldn't get them to seat back in the groove. I soaked them in gas for a couple days and that fixed them right up.

Here are a couple pic's of the gasket. One show it mounted. Note all the extra rubber hanging below the insert.

The other shows the old gasket against a new one for comparisonuploadfromtaptalk1403842847670.jpg

I used to spend my free time hanging with a Bimmer specialist mechanic. He taught me to adjust the size of and o-ring/rubber seal using brake cleaner or silicone spray with a ziplic baggie.

A brake cleaner soak shrinks the seal. (seal in baggie, spray, close baggie and allow to sit)
A silicone spray soak expands the seal. (same process)

This was useful to me as I was generally messing with 30 year old seals.

My apologies for not sharing sooner. In my little brain gaskets are made of paper, cork and metal while seals are made of rubber. Since I haven't pulled the described cover I didn't realize you were inquiring about something I'd call a seal.
