Hey guys,

I picked up a set of used 440 progressives this week and the lower
caps have been ground down on one side. I called progressive
and their going to give me a couple of caps free. ( very nice service
from Beth over there) The problem is it requires a tool to compress
the spring in order to pull the c clip and change the cap. Progressive
sells the tool for $35 but hate to buy it for one time use. Anyone
out there know of a cheap way to get these caps off. Also if anyone
wanted to know, according to progressive the 440's are not rebuildable
but the 418's are.
Thanks guys,
Chris

Transam--I have used pieces of bar stock with a couple C clamps to fab up a compression tool which works ok for a one-time deal.

if you can compress the shock , you can put like 20 hose clamps on the spring ! I have done this with car springs , this is a trick from the old days ! Very dangerous , i wore my motorcycle helmet when doing it , so i didn't get knocked out , or knock my teeth out ! , but a motorcycle spring is much weaker then a car , it works good !

You MIGHT be able to fit the "fingers" from a coil spring compresser in there. The big chain auto parts stores will give you free loaners. Its worth a shot.

One of these can be made easily if you have some fab skills. Would cost you next nothing too - I made some before - they work well too

Thanks guys,
I work in auto parts and we have coil spring compressors,
I'll give that a shot 1st. If not I'll give all your suggestions
a shot. I have a friend at the local college that has a press
I can try that. Maybe a hook in both eyelets a chain
on both ends and a center bolt that I can tighten. Gotta
admit I like that tool that Max shows.
Thanks,
Chris

Might take you up on that Vendetta. Let me see how the press works
when the pieces come in. I'd like to see what the tool they sale
looks like. Could be the same as could be built. I'll see this week.
