Ok I know this has been asked before, but it is still unclear to me: How do I remove the air nozzle assembly on top of the forks? Is it secured to the forks at all? Is it supposed to just slide up off the forks (with some persuasion). If they don't want to move, how can I best persuade them?

Just remove the air, loosen triple clamps bolts and slide forks down.

They are supposed to slide right out of the air valve assembly??? Mine won't budge. Both sets of clamps are loose, but the air valve assembly is keeping them from sliding out

Correct. It's been so long I don't remember what I did to remove. The tube actually fits into the fork tube. I had the holes welded closed after going to Racetech setup.

Dave, this is a copy of what Transam told EvilD regarding this....

Hey Evil,
I just did the fork seals on mine last weak. Let the air out
and then lightly pry up on the balance tube just above the
circlip on the fork tube. Be careful as there is two o rings
in each side encircling the forks. Just lift up on the right fork then
left slowly walking it up a bit. Then it should slide up, then pull
the circlip off to allow the tube to slide down through the
lower mounts. Job is pretty easy.
Regards,
Chris

Ya I concur. I just removed the forks on my spare '86 last week.

The air thingy was well stuck too. There is a groove in each fork tube with a circular circlip that stops the air assemblies from sliding down. I ended up removing the top triple tree, and then tapped the air assemblies from underneath with a rubber mallet. They were stuck, but eventually started sliding up. Just need to do a little bit on each side at a time, so as not to bend the balancing pipe. The o-rings inside them make for a very tight fit.

Also remember to remove the circlips before sliding the forks out of the lower triple tree!
