I mentioned in the 'new member' thread that I used to own a 96 Vmax, and recently bought another 96 Vmax. Before selling my last one years ago, I removed the Harlan Shiftlight I had re-built in an aluminum housing. It was a hacksaw, drill, and sandpaper affair that turned out pretty good IMO. Well, last weekend I was able to see if my handiwork still functioned, and thankfully it did! For those who have yet to install a shiftlight, I think they're a good idea on this bike, and fairly simple to install - the back of the tach has 3 wires which provide ground, signal and a hot lead of the Harlan device...

Hey guys, recently there was a question about mounting a GPS on the Vmax. I took a photo of the RAM mount ball I transfered from my other bike to the Vmax - simple design, relatively unobtrusive and can be removed in a minute if needed. It's the black rubber ball on the left lower handlebar clamp bolt. It works with a GPS case/craddle and one of these http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-medium-arm-b-socket-ram-b-201u.html:

Last weekend I installed an oil pressure gauge, which I put together following the tips available online - thanks guys! I found it to be an under 30 minute install, including heat-shrinking some electrical insulation to keep it clean - remember to slide this stuff on before attaching the braided line!
I gathered the parts from a few online purchases and an M20 oil drain plug & washers from the local auto part store, which I drilled and tapped for 1/8 NPT. The bracket is made from some aluminum sheet I had available, and spray painted black. Around the gauge I wrapped some 3M electrical tape to help it blend in with the black motor. The gauge itself is a non-liquid filled Marshall unit. Seems to be very responsive, and readings are consistent with what others have posted on this forum in terms of start up and warm temp pressures. So far I like it -it reassures me that the oiling system is healthy, and it gives me an idea of when the oil is warmed up and bike ready to by ridden :) Oh, if you want to install one and are waiting for your next oil change to do so, don't wait. If you roll the front and back wheels over 1 inch pieces of wood to create more of a lean on the side stand, you won't lose any oil when you remove the OEM plug.
