speedometer noise

my speedometer is making a terrible racket.
it isn't the cable or the drive, it is the speedometer itself.
any advice from someone that has been inside one of these things?

taking the speedometer off and putting about 8 drops of light oil down the cable hole and leaving it upside down like that overnight fixed the problem.
no more noise.
