Got everything separated. Had my tray to organize all my tiny parts. Got things started. Pulled off the float bowls.... and saw this...

:bang head::bang head::ummm::damn angry::teeth angry:

I'd already PM'd Danny to see what he thought, and I'm open to suggestions. Anybody out there got a set that hasn't had rusty gas pumped into them and been left to sit for three years. No wonder I got it so cheap....

That carb should clean up and be a good carb, but you have a lot of work to do on the tank or replace it.

I've heard good things about the Caswell plating kit as well as POR 15.

Another option is to talk to your local radiator shop. There is one a couple miles from my house that does fuel tanks. They just did a tank for one of F-350's at work. It was so bad, it had some holes in it and was leaking.

I would buy a gallon can of carb dip and COMPLETELY disassembly those carbs and dip everything metal. I'd consider new brass and I would absolutely replace all the fuel lines, filter, and I would also tear apart the pump and flush it out.

Looks like they will clean up but its going to take some work.

I'm looking at a used tank for $10 and the coating kit for $40.... We'll see how much I save on these carbs. I've got pretty much everything torn down and the rust is coming off nicely.

Now I just have to win the fight to get the tank out. What a ridiculous pain that is.

You are going to have to worry about getting the rust out of all the internal passages. If you cant get it out using conventional methods give me a shout and I will put them in my ultrasonic tank.

Ok, guys (and girls). I've gotten this far. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qLGn5vrBJ9zYEDrY2akwadMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

RagingMain, I might have to take you up on that ultrasonic bath idea. I've gotten out pretty much all the rust flakes that I can see, blasted air and carb cleaner through every hole I could find, and soaked/dried all the parts again tonight. I'm sure there are still some bits somewhere, but I'll go though this again probably three more times this week before I start sending stuff out.

I did try to get out one of the needle valve seats and pretty well ruined that, so I'll have to take that one to a shop to have them get the seat out. I'm ordering a bunch of internal brass stuff this week, too, so I'll put a new seal and plug on that order. I was sure I could get it out if I drilled out the brass plug like everyone else, but I just can't get the seat to come loose.

Any thoughts or suggestions you guys have are welcome. I'm trying to just go slow and steady, and not get too frustrated. This was a ridiculous job, but I wanted to do it myself if possible. I really don't want to still have to go out and buy a set of rebuilt carbs, when I'm so close.

Use a 'C' clamp.

You've made huge progress so far. With help from the Experts here you are well on your way to completing this rebuild...
Your satisfaction level will be tremendous when they're back on the bike...

I'm going to get a better/smaller c-clamp on the way home today.

I do feel pretty good about the way things have turned out. I gotta say that this is the friendliest, most helpful board I post on. That includes some of my personal friends that I used to get to ride with. I just don't want to mess anything up during this process. Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

You're geting there. Those carbs look way better. Keep the pics comimg. And thanks for poting. I've used guitar wire to clean circuits before, with lots of carb cleaner and air pressure when needed, that's on a total strip down first. Not something to do if you're in a hurry. It's also very harsh on the carbs.

Anyone using the ultra- sonic cleaner system from Harbor Freight? The $ deal is right if it works like it is advertised to. Can you get 2 carb bodys in at once? If it does clean well, I might get one. Would it be a nice Christmas presant for my wife?I think it makes jewelry shine very nice too.

Don't forget Damon Ferriaolla SP? has the carb rebuild video available for purchase. If any of you out there are like me, I can read about something a hundred times and not get it but show me once and it all clicks and falls together nicely from there. Well worth the investment just like buying quality tools. A great gift to one's self!
Let us know how it's going.

Ok. I gotta get some liquid wrench or something in addition to this new clamp. I can't turn it any tighter and this plug is just sitting there.

The plug is out, but that seat is really stuck. I'm at a gig right now, but I left it clamped to see if constant pressure and silicone spray will do anything. I might have to redrill the seat to get it out.

Ok. I got it out and pushed in the new seat. No screen, though, because I didn't order the replacement yet. Here's a pic of what looks to be a difference in depth between the original and replacement seats....

And here's a pic of the old seat.

It's pretty beat up, but didn't actually look that dirty. The plug did have a bunch of gunk on it when it came out, though. Nothing flaky, just like little green/white mud. All the inlet tubes freely flow clear carb cleaner when I spray in them. So what I'm wondering is... Do I HAVE to drill out the other ones and use the replacement seats that came with my rebuild kits, or do you guys thing I can leave the originals in there. I know there's a "should" factor here, and it's not like the bike is going anywhere with the carbs still in a million pieces. I'm just wondering if I could have actually left all of them intact and run it like that. I haven't ordered the replacement plug(s) and screen(s) yet, so I'm going to defer to the judgement of the board on this one. Now that I have an idea of what it takes to get them out, I'm willing to go after the other ones if I have to.
