    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Thanks Rob (Maxine) :) I always get the jet sizes screwed up. Need to take better notes instead of relying on you all the time...lol. I forgot we put 155's in with the pipes/K&N...assuming we'd need them and then jetted down (back to stock) after getting dyno results. I just knew I jetted...

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Maybe wrote it wrong....After I get the nylon screw started threaded, I deliberately pop the spacer out of the detent and roll the needle around until it falls back in. I fully tighten the nylon and then try to rotate to make sure it's still there. I understand your point and see how that...

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

attached dyno sheet, the one March 2012 was after jetting 1 size down on the main jet, syching carbs, and shimming needles out .019. The other is the initial run...stock VMax, marks 4 into 2, K&N airbox

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Dammit...A/F is OK...but lost HP and torque. Time to talk to Mr Morely :) I'll post both dyno sheets when I get them scanned at work.

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Evan....agreed about the forum. Absolutely amazing. I've got a friend here in town that is patient enough to walk me through everything the first time and then I'm usually comfortable enough to do on my own. If there was 1 thing to be good at...I suppose carb work would be it, unfortunately...

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Thanks for all the help. Took 1 of the 2 shims and put her back together. I did feel one slide sticking/rougher compared to the other 3 so cleaned will a dallop of WD40. Runs like a raped ape now. Wish I knew if it was the excess shim or if the slide was sticky. Side note...getting the...

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

No dyno sheet...he said A/F was getting up to 17 and didn't want to go any further. He recommended lifting the needles. Have it rescheduled for this coming Tuesday.

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

Thanks guys...I double checked the retaining part of the nylon immediately after the problem and all the needles are tight. I'll try removing a washer tomorrow and let you know how it goes... I just saw a bunch of posts on here with Marks 4 into 2...and they seemed to be using 2 for .038, so I...

    carb needle shim, backfire, sluggish

After going to the dyno this morning and finding out I was a little lean in the mid-range...realized I needed to shim the needles. Followed the how-to on here...got the radio shack washer pack, mic'ed at .019. Added 2 washers between the nylon and the retainer clip, making sure to push the...

    Dyno run

OK...first off, sorry for the confusion. Definitely came with 152.5's (I blame it completely on my 40+ year old brain :)). Got a set of 150's from Sean and put those in. Seat of the pants seemed crisper, but something about the sound just didn't seem right. Occasional idle issues too...but...

    Dyno run

Everyone keeps saying 152.5's are stock....but I know I pulled 150's out of mine and pretty positive they'd never been touched.... Specops...I wonder if you just have better airflow than me? weird they'd react so differently with the same pipes. Thanks for the responses....

    Dyno run

Bike is a stock '98. K&N filter, Marks 4:2, 2 inch cans, 152.5 jets. Was happy with the 120 ponies....but as you can see, way too rich. Should have left the stock jets (150) in. A friend in town recommended just dropping 1 jet size (back to 150), and make up for any remaining richness with...
